the party atmosphere is so hectic that olivia's the only person keeping you grounded. she leads you through clumps of people, moving in rhythm with the music that's blasting so loud that you think your eardrums might burst.
she receives a few nods from classmates, and a permanent smile paints her face as a result. whoever is controlling the color of the lights that loom overhead changes the color. the soft purple lights transform into a raging red.
the color has a way of making the atmosphere that much more intimidating, but you're the only person who thinks this way. all of the people that occupy the small house cheer, raising their plastic cups towards the ceiling.
olivia practically shoves you on the couch, right beside seungcheol's best friend, yoon jeonghan. you don't even have a moment to collect yourself before she's whispering ever so secretly in your ear. "keep him busy for the next ten minutes, (y/n)."
"okay, i've got it." you say, the worry sliding into your voice.
what if this goes wrong?
"where's your friend, jeonghan?" olivia asks in a convincingly polite way. she sounds completely different now, she's transformed herself into this sweet, innocent girl in a matter of minutes.
jeonghan brings a plastic cup to his lips, hesitating before downing its contents. he surveys the cup. you're not sure if he didn't hear olivia, or if he's just uninterested in speaking to her. he seems distracted, nonetheless.
he chuckles, then tentatively clears his throat. "i'm sure he's around here somewhere. you'll find him, if he wants to be found."
olivia tries to stop herself, the urge to narrow her eyes at jeonghan, and fails miserably. she's glaring at him. if looks could kill, jeonghan would certainly be dead.
"this party is kind of boring, isn't it?" you find yourself saying, trying to spur a lighthearted conversation.
olivia huffs, then she leaves you and jeonghan alone. her angry, yet receding, footsteps are drowned out by the music.
"which party isn't?" jeonghan leans back.
his head rests on the couch cushion. his eyes draw to a close, and you wonder how he can find any level of peace in a place as loud as this one.
you rely on yourself to continue the conversation, as olivia's directive screams in your mind. "so, how'd you end up spending your saturday night like this?"
"i'd rather sit through a boring party than study for a math exam that's impossible to pass." words pass between jeonghan's lips.
since he's talking as softly as he is, you're left with no other choice but to read his lips just to make sure that you understand exactly what he's saying. your eyes study the curvature of his lips. you study the color of them, just how gorgeous they seem. it's not long before your eyes are drinking in the sight of his beauty.
without warning, jeonghan parts his eyes.
you flinch, worried that he's caught you in the act of admiring him.
keep talking. i've got to keep talking to him.
"yeah, i hate math." you confess to jeonghan, covering your face in the process.
earlier, you felt the heat sear your cheeks. so, there's no way that you've gotten any less flustered in a matter of seconds. you have no plans of letting jeonghan see that he made you blush.
"my friend practically dragged me here, too." he says, while looking at you like he's entertained by your shyness.
"my friend did the same thing. she wanted to meet your friend. she seems to be under his spell, like most of the girls at this party."
you can't stop your eyes from rolling as soon as you bring up seungcheol.
"you don't seem to be under his spell." jeonghan suggests.
his eyes fall on yours, then he's smirking at you.
"i'm not." you quickly say.
there's a change in him, maybe it's curiosity or something, but jeonghan looks intrigued by your disgust for his best fried. "why-"
"no offense to your friend, but i just don't understand what's so special about him." you start, feeling a rant stirring in your mind."i've seen girls crowd around the rec center just to watch him workout. i've seen them practically embarrass themselves just so he'll look their way, and what i can't understand is why they do it. he is just a man, nothing more or less."
in the middle of your speech, you became impassioned. you dropped your hands, leaving your blushing face vulnerable to jeonghan's eyes, but that's the least of your worries. there seems to be someone else that's joined you and jeonghan, stealing the mindless security that you found in jeonghan.
