in the whirlwind of madness that you see as a normal day at work, you stand before your supervisor, sergeant kang.

some of your colleagues occupy the emergency lines, while others rush to the supply rooms to choose the weapons that they'll use to sedate the vampires. yet, you're focused on pitching your idea to sergeant kang.

"i know that this is a dangerous mission, sir, but i know that i can succeed in completing it. please, just-"

"no, (y/n), i don't care how many times that you ask me to, i am not assigning you to that mission." sergeant kang shakes his head, letting the slightest amount of his annoyance show, but at least he's entertaining the conversation.

yesterday, he waved you away as soon as he saw you leave your desk.

ever since the night that you met seokmin, you found yourself wanting to save people from vampires. shortly after that, you began your training. you would ensure that no one lose their family to bloodthirsty vampires like you did.

it took six months for you to become a vampire hunter, but you've yet to be assigned to your first official mission.

in the first six months of being a hunter, all you've managed to do is pick up phone calls from panic-stricken people who've encountered a vampire. you'd grown bored of taking calls. vampires run amok, and you want to be the one to capture them.

"sir, with all due respect, you know that i'm the best chance that you've got when it comes to taking the vampire academy down. so, please just reconsider letting me take on this mission." you start, but sergeant kang stands.

the coffee pot seems to have caught his eye. you follow him, dodging the group of training students that are eager to go on their first field assignment. you can see the excitement in their faces, and you remember just how bright-eyed you were back then.

now, you're so desperate that your excitement has melted away.

"okay, i'll reconsider." sergeant kang announces, while reaching for the coffee pot.

"thank you so much, sir."

you turn on your heel, ready to return to your desk. you're glad to give sergeant kang some time to think things over.

"i've taken some time to think it over, and what i said before still stands." sergeant kang responds while the coffee hits his cup.

"sir!" you groan.

"i know that you want to capture as many vampires as you can because of what they did to your family, but that's exactly why you shouldn't be assigned to this mission."

"sir, i can separate my personal feelings from my duty as a hunter. i can do this."

"sorry, (y/n), i just don't think that you're the right fit for the mission."

you slam your hand on the table where the coffee pot sits. "can't you see that i am?! can't you see that i've been dying to prove myself ever since i started training..." you calm yourself down, once you realize that yelling at sergeant kang will get you nowhere. "i'm sorry, sir, i didn't mean to raise my voice. i just get really upset whenever people underestimate me. believe it or not, people have underestimated me my whole life."

"(y/n),"

"i already know what you're going to say, but i think you should just save your breath. there's no mission that isn't dangerous, sir. i knew that when i decided to become a hunter, so i'm not afraid of danger. i just want to prove to you and myself that i'm a good hunter."

sergeant kang scratches the stubble on his face. you weren't completely sure what was going through his mind, but it seems that he's mulling things over.

i might actually have a chance now.

"do you really think that you'll be successful?" he asks, then takes a small sip of his coffee.

"yes, i do. i'm sure of it, sir."

a soft sigh is all you get from sergeant kang. "okay, then the mission's yours."

did he actually say what i think he did? am i dreaming?

"thank you so much. you won't regret this, sir." you thank sergeant kang, still in disbelief that he actually agreed to your request:

"your training for this mission will begin at dawn. after you've completed your training, you'll be given an in-depth explanation of what your role is in all of this. then, once you demonstrate that you understand all of the information that's been presented to you, you'll be sent to vampire academy. you'll be sent to the academy via portal. do you have any questions for me, (y/n)?" sergeant kang speaks with authority, and that's when the importance of this mission dawns on you.

this is real.

"no, sir. i'll see you tomorrow morning." you quickly say, before running to share the news with your closest friend, seokmin.

"seokmin!" you call out to him. "lee seokmin, i know that you hear me calling your name, so why won't you answer me?"

a phone is glued to seokmin's ear, much like the look of concentration on his face that you're sure won't disappear until the phone call ends.

"what's going on, (y/n)? i'm on a really important call right now, and-" seokmin tries to get back to the call.

"do you remember that mission that i kept begging sergeant kang to give me?" in a sing-song voice, you ask.

"the vampire academy mission?"

"yeah, that's the one."

"alright, what about it?" seokmin pulls the phone away from his ear to speak to you.

"he finally agreed to let me take on the mission. isn't that amazing, seokmin?" you smile, and you can hear the happiness in your voice.

"no, it's...you can't..." seokmin stutters. "that is a very risky mission, (y/n). you have to go undercover in a place that's crawling with vampires and infiltrate them."

you scoff. "wow, since when did you become sergeant kang? i thought that you'd be happy for me, but you seem wary about me accepting this mission."

"(y/n), that mission is one that should be given to senior hunters. there are lots of hunters who've lost their lives during undercover missions because they were outnumbered or their identity was discovered." seokmin places the phone on its holder, cutting off the person on the other end who's in life-threatening danger.

"you can list all of the reasons why i shouldn't do this, seokmin, but it's not going to change anything. i am taking this mission, and i will succeed." you rant.

"fine, but i'm going with you." seokmin says with such cool confidence.

"what? no, you can't do that. sergeant kang needs you to stay here, seokmin."

"you're going to need a partner if you want to complete this mission. so, i'm going with you."

you know seokmin well enough to know when he's being serious, and now is one of those times.
