Arabella glanced at Alex, her eyes filled with worry. "Are you sure about this, Alex? What if something goes wrong?"
"We don't have a choice," Alex replied, his voice steady but his eyes betraying his apprehension. "Rose needs to feed. Look at her, maybe she'll heal faster too."
I met Alex's eyes, a mixture of hope and fear in his depths. "Alex, are you sure about this? I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't," Alex said, walking over to me. "I trust you, Rose."
Arabella hovered by the door, her fingers twisting together in anxiety. Alberta and Stan stood nearby.
"I'll be here to help," Stan said, his deep voice steady. "If anything goes wrong, we'll stop it immediately."
I nodded, taking a deep breath. Alex rolled up his sleeve, exposing his wrist. Arabella took a step closer, her eyes wide with worry. Alberta placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"You can do this, Rose," Alex said softly, extending his wrist to me.
My eyes locked onto the pulse in Alex's wrist, my breathing quickening. Slowly, I leaned forward, my fangs elongating. I bit down gently, the taste of Alex's blood filling my senses. For a moment, everything was under control. I sipped slowly, savoring the blood, closing my eyes in bliss.
But then, the hunger surged. It was as if a dam had broken within me. I gripped Alex's arm tighter, drinking faster, more desperately. Alex gasped in pain, his face contorting.
"Rose, stop," His words were loud and clear, but it was as if I couldn't react.
"Rose, no!" Arabella cried.
"Stan, do something!" I heard Alberta shout.
The next thing I felt, I was ripped from Alex. Blood still dripping from my mouth and Stan's arm keeping me tightly against him, I realised that when I fead, everything in my head was quiet.
Then my eyes widened.
"Alex!"I whispered, broken. "I'm so sorry!"
Alex collapsed into Arabella's arms, his face ashen. "I'll be okay," he whispered, though his voice was weak.
Arabella pressed her hands against Alex's wound, trying to stop the bleeding. "We need help! Now!"
The room erupted into chaos. Nurses and doctors rushed in, alerted by the commotion. They quickly assessed the situation, their faces grim as they worked to stabilize Alex. He was whisked away, leaving us in stunned silence.
Realization coming to my mind, I ripped myself from Stan's arms and ran.
My tears splashed onto the paper, smudging the ink, but I didn't care. I folded the note and left it on a chair where I knew they would find it. I took one last look around the empty room, a sense of finality settling over me.
I couldn't stay. I wouldn't endanger them any longer.
I made my way to the dorm's exit, my heart heavy with sorrow and resolve. I slipped out into the early morning light, the students just beginning to wake up around me. I had no plan, no destination—only a desperate need to get as far away as possible.
As I walked through the unfamiliar streets, my mind raced with a mixture of memories and regrets. I thought of Christian, my twin, and how hard I've worked to find him. Leaving him behind was like tearing out a part of my soul, but it had to be done. For his safety.
I thought of Alex, of the trust and love in his eyes as he offered his wrist to me. The memory of his face twisted in pain, of his voice pleading for her to stop, was a torment I couldn't escape. Alex, who had believed in me, who had tried to help me—I had betrayed him in the worst way possible.
Arabella, Alberta, Stan—all of them had tried to support me, to help me find a way through this nightmare. But their efforts were in vain. I was beyond help. A danger that needed to be isolated, far from those I cared about.
I kept walking, the city morphing around me as I moved from familiar streets to places I had never seen. Hours passed, and the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows. My legs ached, but I didn't stop. I couldn't. If I stopped, I might turn back. I might falter in my resolve.
By late afternoon, I found myself in a small town miles away from the Academy. It was quiet, the kind of place where I could disappear, where no one would know my name or my past. I found a small motel and paid for a room with cash. The clerk didn't ask any questions, barely glancing at me as he handed over the key.
In the solitude of the motel room, the reality of what I had done settled over me like a suffocating blanket. I had left my brother, my friends, everything I knew. I had no idea how I would survive, how I would control the monstrous urges within me. But I had to try. For their sake.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at my hands, still stained with Alex's blood. The enormity of my decision weighed heavily on me, but I knew it was the right one. I was a threat, a danger that couldn't be allowed to roam free.
"I'm sorry," I whispered to the empty room, hoping that somehow, my sins would be forgiven and that Alex would be okay.
Hoping they would understand my decision.
With that, I lay down, exhaustion overtaking me. As I drifted into a troubled sleep, I resolved to find a way to control the beast within me. I will keep running as far as I have to as long as they are safe.
