I stepped out of my dorm room, my bare feet padding softly against the cold linoleum floor. The oversized T-shirt, a relic from some forgotten event, hung loosely on my slender frame, offering little warmth against the chill of the night air. As I closed the door behind me, a strange sensation prickled at the back of my neck, an instinctive warning that something was amiss.
Glancing down the dimly lit hallway, I noticed two familiar figures standing a few doors down. Stan and Alex. They were engrossed in conversation, their voices barely above a whisper, but to my enhanced vampire senses, their words were as clear as if they were standing right beside me.
"...where did you find her?" Stan's voice carried a note of urgency, tinged with suspicion.
Alex's response was equally subdued, but there was a hint of defensiveness in his tone. "I told you, she was just... lost. I stumbled upon her in the woods near campus."
My heart skipped a beat as I strained to catch every word. Why were they talking about me? And why did it sound like Alex was hiding something?
Stan seemed unconvinced. "And you just happened to be wandering around the woods in the middle of the night? Come on, Alex, don't play dumb with me. You know her, don't you?"
There was a tense pause, broken only by the distant hum of the overhead lights. I held my breath, senses on high alert, waiting for Alex's response.
Finally, he spoke, his voice barely audible. "I... I used to know her. A long time ago. But that's all in the past now."
My mind raced, trying to make sense of Alex's cryptic words. What did he mean, a long time ago? And why did it feel like there was a hidden history, shrouded in shadows?
Before I could dwell on it any further, Stan's voice cut through the silence, sharp and incredulous. "You expect me to believe that? That you just happened to stumble upon a girl from your past, lost in the woods? There's more to this, Alex, and I'm going to find out what."
With that, Stan turned on his heel and stalked off down the hallway, leaving Alex standing alone in the dim glow of the overhead lights. I watched him for a moment, my mind swirling with questions and doubts.
Was Alex hiding something from me? And if so, what secrets lay buried in the depths of his past? Only time would tell, but one thing was certain—I was determined to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
Suddenly, he turned around.
Stopping in his tracks, Alex faced me, his expression guarded. "Rose? What are you doing out here?"
I stepped forward, my eyes wide with curiosity. "I... I saw you talking to Stan. What was that all about?"
Alex hesitated. "It was nothing, just... guy stuff. You know how it is."
I raised an eyebrow, clearly showing how unconvinced I was. "Guy stuff, huh? That's a bit vague, don't you think?"
Alex offered me a sheepish smile, hoping to deflect her questions. "He asked how I knew you and I spat out the first things I could think of."
For now, I accepted his answer albeit reluctantly. "Okay, fair enough. Let's just go back to my room, yeah?"
Alex nodded, following me into the room. I laid down again, wrapping myself in the blankets. When I saw him standing awkwardly, I chuckled.
"Aren't you gonna join me?" I asked.
He hesitated but took off his shoes and jacket and joined me, wrapping his arms around me as my head rested on his chest.
The soft glow of the moon cast a gentle radiance over the room as we lay intertwined on my bed, fingers tracing lazy patterns across each other's skin. The air was filled with a sense of quiet anticipation, a palpable tension that hung between us like a delicate thread.
I broke the silence first. "Alex, what do you think will happen when the DNA test results come back?"
Alex's fingers paused their gentle caress, his expression clouded with uncertainty. "I don't know, Rose. It's hard to say."
I shifted slightly, propping myself up on one elbow to look at him more closely. "But what if... what if I'm not who I think I am? What if there's something... something dark in my past that I don't remember?"
Alex reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair away from my face. "Rose, whatever the results say, it doesn't change who you are. You're still the same person, the same kind and compassionate soul that I've come to know."
I sighed, my gaze drifting to the ceiling as I pondered his words. "I know, but... there's still so much we don't know. About my past, about where I came from..."
Alex pulled me close, wrapping his arms around me in a protective embrace. "We'll figure it out together, Rose. Whatever happens, we'll face it together."
I buried my face against his chest, seeking solace in his comforting presence. "I just wish we didn't have to wait. The uncertainty is driving me crazy."
Alex pressed a gentle kiss to the top of my head, his voice soft and reassuring. "I know, Rose. But we'll get through this. And when the results come back, we'll face whatever they reveal, together."
