Shadows of Secrecy

I sat on the edge of the worn-out sofa, my gaze fixed on the floor as Ava's words pierced the tense silence between us like a heavy fog. The faint flicker of candlelight danced across the dimly lit room, casting elongated shadows on the walls. Ava stood before me, her eyes blazing with frustration and concern.

"Rose, do you even realize what you're doing to yourself?" Ava's voice was laced with disappointment as she paced back and forth across the room. "You can't keep running away every time things get tough. We're supposed to be in this together, remember?"

I remained silent, hands clenched tightly in my lap. I knew Ava was right, but the weight of my secrets felt like an anchor dragging me down into the depths of despair.

"I can't keep covering for you, Rose," Ava continued, her voice softening slightly as she stopped in front of her friend. "I need to know what's going on with you. Why are you drinking so much lately? And why did you just up and leave without saying anything?"

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I knew I had to do. I couldn't bear to lose Ava, not after everything we had been through together.

"Ava, I..." I hesitated, my throat tightening. "I've been trying to find him. My brother."

Ava's eyes widened in surprise, her anger momentarily forgotten as she sank onto the sofa beside me. "Your brother? The one the note was talking about?"

"Yeah," I whispered. "I thought it was bullshit at first. But we've been following some leads, and we think we might have found him."

Ava reached out and gently placed a hand on my shoulder, her expression softening with understanding. "Why didn't you tell me?"

I shrugged helplessly, my eyes brimming with unshed tears. "This is so much more complicated than we thought, Ava. Things are still a little blurry though."

Ava squeezed her shoulder reassuringly. "Rose, you don't have to do this alone. We'll figure it out together, okay? Just promise me one thing."

I looked up, heart heavy with guilt. "Anything."

"Promise me you'll stop shutting me out. I can't be your friend if you don't let me in," Ava said, her voice firm but gentle. "Come on, let's go get lunch."

The cafeteria buzzed with the familiar hum of chatter and the clatter of cutlery as Ava and I found a secluded table near the window. The midday sun streamed in, casting dappled shadows on the worn wooden tabletop.

I sighed, my thoughts drifting back to the encounter with Alex just moments before Ava came to my room. Were we a couple?

"Are you okay, Rose?" Ava asked, her brow furrowing with concern as she settled into her chair.

I forced a smile, my mind still reeling from the unexpected encounter. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... surprised to see Alex, that's all."

Ava raised an eyebrow, her gaze searching my face for any sign of deception. "Is there something going on between you two that I should know about? I mean, he did bring you back here after you've been gone for days."

I hesitated. "We've just been... keeping it casual," I admitted, thinking about the way we shared a bed this morning.

Ava nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. "Were you spending the nights at his place?"

I choked on my drink. "No, I don't-"

Our conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Christian, his easy smile sending a shiver down my spine. I forced myself to look away, my heart pounding in my chest as he approached our table.

"Mind if I join you?" Christian asked, bending to kiss Ava's head.

Ava glanced at me, a knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Of course not, Christian. Pull up a chair."

Christian took a seat opposite me, his emerald green eyes locking with mine for a brief moment before he turned his attention to Ava. "So, what's new with you two?"

Ava launched into a lively recount of her latest adventures, her animated gestures drawing a smile from Christian as he listened intently. I tried to focus on their conversation, but my mind kept drifting back to the possibility of him being my brother.

How would that even work? That would crush his and Ava's relationship.

"Rose, are you okay?" Christian's voice broke through my thoughts, his concerned gaze searching my face.

Forcing a smile, I took a sip of my water. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... lost in thought, I guess."

Christian nodded sympathetically, his eyes softening with understanding. "I know how you feel. Sometimes, it's hard to shut off your brain, you know?"

"Yeah, tell me about it." I looked out the window.

As the lunch hour drew to a close, I rushed from the room, my thoughts still consumed by the enigmatic Christian. The shadows of my past were already closing in around me again, threatening to engulf me in their darkness once more.

Whispered secrets and a blaring headache later, I found myself holding another bottle of whiskey. I know I promised Ava that I would drink less, but the thought of Christian being my brother and the results taking so long, had me on my nerves.

Besides, the shadows were bothering me again and the only way to get rid of them was by clearing my mind with a nice shot of whiskey.
