The music was deafening, pulsing through my body as I made my way through the crowd of dancing bodies. I had come to this party hoping to blow off some steam after a long week of training, but I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that I should be somewhere else.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see Ava's name flashing on the screen. Again. I sighed, hitting the ignore button and shoving the phone back into my pocket. I loved Ava, but her constant worrying was starting to feel suffocating.
I pushed my way through the crowd, looking for a quiet place to escape the noise and the pressure. I finally found a door leading to a balcony, and I slipped outside, taking a deep breath of the cool night air.
My phone buzzed again, and I knew it was Ava. I hesitated before answering, steeling myself for another lecture.
"Hey, Ava."
"Rose! Finally! I've been trying to reach you all night. Where are you?"
"I'm at a party. It's fine, Ava. I just needed to get out for a bit."
"But Rose, you know it's not safe for you to be out alone. What if someone from your past recognizes you?"
I rolled my eyes, my frustration mounting. "Ava, I can take care of myself. I've been doing it my whole life."
"That's not the point, Rose! You're not just some random student anymore. You're training to be my bodyguard, and that means you have a responsibility to be careful."
"I know that, Ava. But I'm still a person, and I need some space sometimes. You can't expect me to be at your beck and call 24/7."
"I'm not asking you to be my servant, Rose. I'm asking you to be my friend. And as my friend, I need you to be safe and responsible."
I clenched my jaw, anger coursing through me. "You know what, Ava? Maybe I'm not cut out for this bodyguard thing after all. Maybe I should just go back to my old life."
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and when Ava spoke again, her voice was quiet. "Is that really what you want, Rose?"
I hesitated, my anger draining away as quickly as it had come. "I don't know, Ava. I just need some time to think."
"Okay, Rose. I understand. Just please, be careful."
"I will, Ava. Goodnight."
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the dilapidated warehouse district where I had chosen to hide. The air was thick with the scent of old machinery and forgotten dreams.
It was here, amidst the relics of a bygone era, that Mr. Dumont, Alberta, and Charles finally found me. I could hear as they approached the old warehouse, the flickering light from within danced across the broken windows.
The door creaked ominously as they pushed it open, revealing the scene inside. I could see the way they judged as I sat at a makeshift table, surrounded by the remnants of my rebellion - empty whiskey bottles and the telltale white lines of powder.
Mr. Dumont's face hardened at the sight, his disappointment palpable. Alberta's eyes filled with rage. Charles stood in silence, his fists clenched, struggling to contain his anger.
"Rose, what have you done?" Mr. Dumont's voice was stern, yet tinged with sorrow. I looked up, my eyes defiant.
"I'm not going back," I declared, my voice steady despite the turmoil within.Alberta stepped forward, her fists clenching and unclenching.
"Sweetheart, you can't stay here. This isn't the way to deal with your problems."Charles finally spoke, his voice tight with emotion. "You're throwing your life away, Rose."
I remained silent, my stubbornness a wall between me and the people. Seeing that their words were falling on deaf ears, Mr. Dumont pulled out his phone and dialed Ava's number. If anyone could reach me, it was my best friend, and he knew that.
Ava arrived shortly after, her presence immediately softening the tension in the room. She took one look at me and the chaos surrounding me and sighed deeply.
"Rose, we're all worried about you," Ava began, her voice gentle yet firm. "You can't keep running from your problems. We're here for you, but you have to meet us halfway."
"I don't know how to fix this," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. I could feel their eyes staring at me, once again judging. "Why did you come here, Ava. I needed space, you said you would give it to me!"
"Destroying yourself like this is not space, Rose! I thought you were better than this." Ava cried, pink flushing her cheeks and wetness dripping down her chin. "I thought you cared?"
"I thought I did too." I whispered, my eyes drifting to the window. "I thought about everything and I decided that I wasn't going to continue going to the academy. I tried, I really did. But these voices, they don't think I am cut out for this. And I don't think so either."
I was met with silence. Then Alberta stepped closer. "This is bullshit, Rose. And you know it. You can't just decide to drop out like this!" She exclaimed.
"Try me." I snapped. "And don't you dare look at me like I am crazy." I said to Stan Dumont. "You don't get to judge me like this. You don't know anything about me. Besides, I'll be eighteen next month, nobody can stop me from quitting school." I smirked.
Turning back to the window, I wrapped my arms around myself. "As I said before, I am not leaving. Now, I would like to be left alone."
