Getting rushed in for an emergency c-section was absolutely terrifying. Enzo's heart rate was decreasing throughout each contraction and after being closely monitored for about fifteen minutes the doctor decided that they needed to get him out as soon as possible. I was rushed down to theatre with Ale right by my side. She held my hand tightly as I was wheeled down the hallway and remained by my side throughout the entire process.
"I'm right here, ok? I'm not going anywhere" she kissed my forehead as I laid on the operating table, the doctors and nurses getting ready to start as they prepped my bump.
"I'm scared Ale"
"I know, but you're both going to be ok, our little whirlwind just wants to make the most dramatic entrance into the world that he can" she joked, stroking the hair away from my face as she sat on a stool beside my head.
"We're going to start now Isabel, you're going to feel some pressure and movement as we get him out, but once that's over your baby will be here"
"Ok" I nodded nervously before turning my head to look at my wife.
I gripped my wife's hand tighter than I ever had as they began. I couldn't feel any pain thanks to the epidural and pain meds they had given me, but I could feel the movement as they opened me up and pulled our baby out of me.
My labour with Jordi had been so perfect, we spend most of it at home, just the two of us, as the contractions built, before arriving at the hospital and delivering our son not long later. I had no pain medication, I did it all naturally and it was something that I had wanted to replicate with our little Enzo. The fact that I was here, laying in an operating room as they cut our little baby out me felt so surreal. It was the opposite of what we had wanted, but all I could focus on right now was getting our youngest son into the world safely.
"We're almost there Isabel, your baby will be here any second" The doctor continued to talk to us, keeping us updated as to what he was doing and how things were going.
"Alexia, you can stand up and look if you want to. Your baby boy is about to make his long awaited arrival"
Ale was apprehensive at first, her focus had been solely on me for the last couple of days that that was all she could think about. I don't think she even heard him as she remained seated, holding my hand and stroking my hair gently.
"Ale, stand up. Tell me what he looks like" I spoke softly, looking into my wife's teary hazel eyes.
"Huh?"
"He's almost here, stand up and tell me what he looks like. I want to know if he looks like Jordi..."
"Right, ok" she nodded. Getting to her feet and looking over the sheet that hung in front of us, her hand remaining in mine.
"Here he is!" The doctor called out, quickly followed by a squealing cry that made my heart grow even more than I thought possible.
"Ay dios mío" Ale blubbed as she looked at our son, squeezing my hand before turning to look down at me.
"He's Jordi's twin, he's got dark hair, the same button nose that he had and the dimple in his left cheek just like Jordi"
"I want to see him"
"We just need to check him over and then we'll bring him straight to you Isabel" One of the nurses behind the sheet called out, her voice calm as she tried to reassure me.
