Finding out...

Our twenty week scanned was booked for the day after we arrived home from our family holiday.

The twenty week scan was the most important scan, it's where they check that the baby is growing properly, that the heart, lungs, brain and all the other vital organs are growing correctly and that the baby is healthy.

The twenty week scan was also the first opportunity that we had to find out the gender or our babies. We didn't find out with Jordi, but we did with Enzo and both experiences were amazing, but this time around it was something that Isy and I couldn't agree on.

"I loved the surprise of not knowing when we had Jordi. It made the delivery so much more exciting" Isy explained her point of view as we laid in bed the night before our scan having been discussing the decision for the last half an hour.

"I loved it too, it was so special..." I began.

"But it's different this time around... we're having twins. There is so much that could go wrong, they could be premature, they'll probably need to stay in hospital for a while and..." I explained, pausing as the thought of it all overwhelmed me.

"And?" Isy asked, encouraging me to continue.

"There are just so many unknowns..." I tried but couldn't continue.

"If it will make it easier for you then I am happy to find out" Isy said softly, kissing my temple before placing her hand in top of my growing bump.

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure. Thinking about it you are probably right, one less unknown can only be a good thing... I think it will help the boys prepare too"

"So we're finding out then?"

"Yes, we're finding out" Isy nodded, resting her hand on top of my bump.

"Did you have a gut feeling that the boys were boys when you were pregnant?" I asked.

Isy smiled up at me drawing circles with her finger on my stomach.

"I don't know really, I think deep down I knew that they were doing to be boys. Why? Do you have a feeling?"

"I just can't imagine us ever having a girl..."

"You think it's two boys don't you?" Isy laughed.

"I do"

"As much as I would love to experience having a daughter, four boys would be incredibly special... and I feel like we've got the hang of being boy mums. What if we don't know how to be a girl mum" Isy joked.

We fell asleep talking about the two babies growing inside my stomach. Discussing baby names, how we thought the boys would react to possibly having a girl in the family and where we would go on our babymoon.

Our scan was booked for 9am, so Alba came over to look after the boys whilst Isy and I made the short trip to the hospital.

Twin pregnancies were classed as high risk so we had a doctor conducting our scan rather than the nurse like we did with Jordi and Enzo.

It felt incredibly strange being on the opposite side of this situation. I had always been the one sat on the chair next to the examination table holding my wife's hand, but now I was the one laying on the cold plastic bed with my stomach exposed.

"So, how have you been feeling Alexia? Are you still feeling nauseous?" The doctor asked.

"I'm ok, the nausea still comes and goes but it's not as bad as it was last time I was here. I'm still very tired though, but I suppose that's to be excepted"

"Growing two babies is certainly hard work, but we'll do some blood tests just to double check everything is ok with you"

"Ok" I smiled, squeezing Isy's hand tightly.

"Shall we take a peek then?" The doctor smiled at us both, picking up the ultrasound wand and squirting the cold jelly onto my bump.

The doctor took his time taking measurements of each baby, making sure that everything was how it should be before he finally got to the question we had been waiting for.

"Are we finding out the genders today?"

"Yes we are" Isy and I said in unison, smiling at each other before turning our attention to the screen.

"You've got two boys already haven't you? Are we hoping for a girl this time around?"

"We just want two healthy babies" Isy said as she drew circles on the back of my hand with her thumb.

"Let's look at Baby A first... they are a little boy" The doctor smiled, pointing out on the screen where he had determined the gender.

"Now let's have a look at Baby B who's hiding in the back here... Baby B is a little...."
