Sol Klein did not want to come to school that day. He didn't especially want to see Luci that day. He didn't want to hear her say she could not talk to him anymore. That she didn't want to be his friend anymore. He wouldn't blame her at all. Hell he expected it. Even without all the extra stuff between their families right now. Even with Jim and all. Damn , he thought as he raced down the street from his house towards the big red bricked school building earlier than usual so he could avoid his best friend. His only friend. He couldn't face Luci right now. He couldn't face losing her friendship. Damn his brother. Damn his grandmother. If , when , Luci finally cut him loose he was just taking off. He had two hundred dollars saved up from mowing lawns and some birthday money. That should get him somewhere. Somewhere where nobody knew him. Away from his grandmother and her diets and her judgment. Away from his dumb ass brother who had screwed up his life so bad right now. Away from Luci........
He was panting and red faced when he reached the school entry way . He stumbled inside the building and the first thing he heard was that damn eighth grade loser JT Keller who thought he was so big because his mother was the principal. Like who cared about that ? If his mother was principal he would have hated that , Sol thought as he wiped his big hand over his sweaty face. He headed to the steel water fountain for some much needed water as JT kept calling his name. " Hey , you hear me ! Klein ! K-LEIN ! WHALE BOY ! I heard your brother shot some Black pig cop. Bet he's gonna fry. He fat like you ? Bet when he goes up he'll smell like bacon. Oink , oink ! "
He heard JT laughing cruelly and so were all of JT's friends who always flocked around the boy like a bunch of stupid geese. Sol's eyes filled with the hot rush of tears.
He also heard a familiar and so welcome voice say strongly , " LEAVE HIM THE FUCK ALONE YOU BULLY ! "
Sol whipped around from the water fountain in time to see Luci , his Luci , standing directly in front of JT , and looking mad as hell. She also looked so beautiful. Damn. JT was gonna hurt her ! , he thought in panic as he ran once more over to her. He stood beside her and looked at her. She looked back at him. Then she smiled and reached out for his hand , giving it a squeeze.
JT laughed even harder now , saying , " Oh great , another freak heard from. Go back to the boy's room , Moore. This between me and Whale here. " He looked at his equally smirking friends Pete and Frankie. " You believe this loser here ? How they let him in ? You see his old man ? The Professor X cripple in the wheelchair ? What a nerd. One of them. He got him " two daddies ". "
Luci stood her ground , lifting her little chin stubbornly as only a Lane could do , and stared at the boy with much contempt. " Fuck you , " she said firmly.
JT advanced on her as Sol stepped in front of Luci.
And then they all heard a new voice enter the conversation in the main hallway.
" Now , now , JT , I wouldn't be that dumb if I was you. Wouldn't want me making a call to my Mom , would you ? "
They all turned around and saw Ami Woo leaning against a locker with her ever constant Manga book in her hands. Her spiky hair was green today. And there was an all knowing smirk on her rounded face.
JT cussed. " Nobody cares about your Mom , Woo Woo. My mom is principal and she dates Mr. Sands. So screw you and your Mom. " He looked at his friends. " Come on , guys. "
Then he looked back at Sol and Luci with cold eyes as he said , " This ain't over , bitches. "
