The second day of class was not starting out any better for Luci Moore. It didn't help that she and Sol had different homerooms. Although maybe that was good, Luci thought as she doodled little hearts and flowers inside her notebook along with a heart that said LM loves SK. Then she clumsily scratched it out while thinking how silly she was. Sol was just her friend. He didn't think of her like that. And it was probably best they didn't share the same classes at school. She didn't want him getting in fights with idiots like JT Keller. Not over her. Not over anything. She was the reason he was stuck in in school suspension today, she thought glumly as she tried her best to ignore the other kids who whispered behind their hands at her if not outright laughed. And that name they all had started calling her. She hated it. Almost as much as she hated them calling Sol Whale Boy. He was not that big. Between eating more healthy and them riding bikes all summer long he had lost a few pounds.

She didn't like her homeroom teacher. He was the type of teacher who always had to be the cool friend to his students which Luci always considered weird and kinda pervy. Why would an old dude like Skip Sands  ( he had written his full name on the white erase board in bright red letters and smilingly said that he was " down" with them calling him Skip ) want to be a bunch of middle school kids friend ? The guy had to be as old as her uncles? Except he looked rougher than her Uncle D or Uncle Spencer. He looked mean to her. His eyes were beady and cold blue not warm blue like Uncle Spencer.

She also hated when the teachers did attendance. Why did they have to say their actual names out loud for the whole class to hear? She didn't want to keep being reminded of Eddie. She wasn't Eddie anymore. Eddie was gone forever. She was Luci now. She had always been Luci.

But rules were rules, right. And one rule was they always did attendance.

Skip Sands sat on the edge of his desk, his eyes coolly examining them all as he took attendance. " Edward Moore. "

Luci swallowed hard and remained silent as the other students burst out laughing and stared at her from their seats. Except for Ami Woo , the Chinese girl who dressed all in black with several piercings and purple spiked hair that sat in the back ignoring them all as she openly read Manga.

Skip's eyes fell upon Luci as she quietly tried to pretend she didn't exist. " Mr. Moore , did you hear me? "

Luci whispered," I prefer to be called Luci , sir. "

Skip smirked," And I prefer that my students respond to their real legal name when I call it. In the future, Mr. Moore , you shall respond to your name or I will mark you as absent. Do you understand that? "

Luci wished Sol was there with her. Or Uncle Spencer. But he can't get in the school. Or Uncle D. She felt so alone right now. She hated Eddie. She was not Eddie!

She whispered," Yes. I understand. "

Someone called out nastily," Trannie Boy got schooled ! Go , Mr. Sands ! "

Then everyone laughed. Except for Ami Woo who kept reading her Manga.
