The next day I wake up after being poked in the side for a good 15 minutes with the occasional "Jaz?" Or "Jazzy!" I peel my eyes open to see the boys all dressed up in their school clothes.
"We're gonna be wate!!"Troy complains as I jump out of bed and rush toward the closet. A string of colourful vocabulary runs through my mind, the only thing preventing them from escaping my lips is the fact that I am biting my tongue.
I find a maroon Tommy Hilfiger top and some light blue jean shorts, before changing as fast as I can. Brice opens the front door when I finish and the twins walk outside. I run out the door behind them, slipping on black flip-flops as I shut the door behind us with my car keys in my back pocket. After I strap them into their car seats I smack Brice's hand.
"OW!!"
"What did I say about opening the front door without my permission?"
He groans, shaking his hand with a pout "Someone could snatch me if your not thewe."
"Exactly." I say before shutting his door and climbing into the front seat. I see Troy stick his tongue out as if to say 'Haha you got in trouble'.
"Troy knock it off before I do the same thing to you for instigating." I snap
Troy blushes but asks "Insta-whating?"
"Starting a fight." I explain, putting the car in reverse.
I drive the boys to school, barely making the first bell, and send them off with a kiss on the forehead each. I head back to the apartment and jog back up to our room. As I reach the door, I checked the time on my phone: 9:10.
"Shit." I murmur under my breath as I open the door. "I'm gonna be late.."
I run into the apartment, before switching into a black pencil skirt and a plain cream white blouse. Apparently, upon further review and a major headache for a good hour, I was supposed to wear fancy clothes for my first day. They would give me my uniform if they found I was efficient.
I apply dark,brown-black mascara, grey eyeshadow, and dark red lipstick before pulling my hair into a clean bun, making sure no hair was out of place. I grab my keys from the counter and my black handbag on the couch, then head out the door. My first day should only last until 1 pm, but I have to be there by 10. I power walk as fast as I can out the door to my car.
I'm able to get to Sony records within 30 minutes, leaving me about 3 minutes to clock in.
I walk into the 14 story building and head straight for the front desk lady. I don't want to be rude, since she's on the phone, but I desperately need this job and I don't want to be late because of someone else's conversation.
I clear my throat as loud as I can, trying my best to not sound incredibly needy. The redheaded front desk lady looks up at me from the phone then says into the mic "I'll call you back in a few." Then she hangs up the phone and looks up at me, her left eyebrow raised. "Yes?"
"Um..." I say, nervousness starting to overcome me. "I'm...the new intern..."
"Nice to meet you!" The lady says, surprising the living hell out of me at how nice she is. She extends a hand for me to shake "I'm Jessica! But you can call me Jessi" I take her hand firmly and shake "I'm actually the one whom sent you the conformation letter."
I smile and say as confident as I can "Well, I'm here to prove that I am a real hard worker and that I am more than my résumé."
Jessica smiles wholeheartedly, beginning to type away on her computer "I'll go ahead and sign you in and send you up to your superior." She looks away for a moment to look up at me. "His name is Tom but you can call him Tommy. He is very laid back I assure you.
I feel a weight being lifted off my shoulders. I absolutely hate uptight bosses. When I worked for JcPenny's my boss screamed at me for being a minute late. Now, usually I'm calm and collected about this sort of stuff because my bosses before him had let me explain why I was late. In this case that was completely out of the question. So I guess you could say I blew a gas fuse after he lectured me for ten minutes (10 FUCKING minutes of my life I can never get back) on the importance of being on time, when I snipped off almost all the price tags in the teen clothing section. I know now that I can actually be able to enjoy my new job and keep it as well.
Jessi hands me a silver card with my first and last name on it. "Here is the key to your office and every room on your floor," she smiles warmly, her green eyes welcoming me to her place of work. "You're on the 9th floor, welcome to Sony records Ms. Palmieri."
I smile but feel a twinge of sadness, she reminds me of my mother so much. I walk onto the elevator alone and hit the 9 button. The elevator dings once, twice, and opens up to the ninth floor allowing me to walk out. Wow, this place is humongous!
I look left and right before heading left toward the biggest room, assuming it is Mr. Tom's office. I knock on the door. Once softly. Then twice a little louder.
"Come in!" I hear a voice call from behind the door.
I open the door and I find myself in awe at the sight of his office. Let's just say, it is HUGE! With dark purple walls and bean bag chairs instead of desk chairs, it has a sort of calming theme to it. This guy must be really mellow. I have a feeling he takes yoga. It still escapes me how this guy could stay so calm.
"Hello!" I shriek as a man comes down from the ceiling upside down like a spider. He does a flip forward, landing perfectly on his feet like an alley cat. "You must be Ms. Jasmine!" He bows before extending his hand to me "I'm Tommy, your boss." I see his nose crinkle up when he says the word 'boss'.
I take his hand and find myself giggling. there is just no doubt in my mind that he is gay. But it doesn't bother me at all. I knew quite a few friends who were gay back in high school. "Do you not like the word 'boss'?" I ask him, a smile playing on my lips.
"The word makes me sound so," he thinks for a minute, pacing a little "stuck up!"
I smile and suggest "How about mentor? That sounds cool, right?"
He perks up immediately "I love it!" He exclaims "You're already starting to be like one of my employees, I think you'll fit in here perfectly!"
He shows me around. From my office, to the lounging room, to the recording studios. I even get to meet Hillary Duff! I was thrilled, seeing as she was one of my idols as a young child. She is very sweet and was actually very happy to meet a fan of hers.
By the time the work day ended, I met everyone. Well, except for the other intern whom shared my office with me. Her name is Jacquelyn, I think, but she was off today for vacation or something.
I wave goodbye to Jessi as the clock hits 1:30 then make my way to my car. I start it up and drive back to the boys school. As soon as they see me park, they run out to meet me halfway. Troy gives me a funny look as Brice hugs my leg in greeting.
"Why are you dwessed so funny Jazzy?" He asks, wrinkling his nose a little in that cute way five year olds do.
I smile "For my job, silly." I say, poking his side "I have to dress like this."
He nods understandingly but sticks his tongue out in protest "You wook better in normal cwothes. You wook wike mommy."
I roll my eyes, holding back a cringe of sadness at another memory of mom, and put them in their carseats. We drive back to the apartment as the boys recount their day to me.
When we finally reach home, I fix mac & cheese lunch and play board games with them until dinner. Then I gave them their favorite Dino nuggets before sending them off to bed.
Feeling completely worn out, I switch into my night shirt and night pants. u lay down on the couch, pulling my blanket over me as I close my eyes. Thoughts of tomorrow walk through my mind as I fall into the darkness of sleep.
