Dogday found himself spiraling into a panic, his breathing quickening as he thought back to the memories of that day.
Dogday had managed to convince Catnap to avoid joining The Prototype, days prior to the Hour Of Joy. It had strengthened their friendship, but at a great cost.
Somehow, The Prototype had heard of the feline's betrayal, and he no longer visited him in Home Sweet Home. They thought that his departure had been a gift, but when that day came.
They realized that it was a curse.
Dogday remembered the screams of the employees, how they were slaughtered as toys invaded Playcare. Dogday and the critters did their best to protect who they could, while Catnap tried to deescalate the situation himself.
However, the two would learn that Catnap made a grand mistake. Since he was busying stopping the other toys, the perfect opportunity was left for the critters to be picked off.
Slowly.
At first, they didn't know what was happening. While evacuating playcare, half of them had disappeared.
Hoppy. Picky. Bobby. And Crafty. A sense of few began to overwhelm Kickin, who opted to search for them. Alone.
Just in case.
Dogday, although unwilling allowed such a thing to happen. After all, Bubba had stated that in the absolute worst case scenario, it'd be better for only Kickin to be last rather than the rest of the critters.
But that wasn't the worst part.
No.
It was how The Prototype himself plucked the chicken off, right in front of them. He ripped his body to shreds, tearing every bit of him apart. Parts of the chicken's body that the two should've never seen were exposed.
They froze at the sight, before The Prototype then made the deliberate choice to pick Bubba off next, right in front of Dogday.
Dogday didn't know why he stood there. He knew that he should've ran, but he was afraid. For once, as their leader...
He didn't know what to do.
He watched as Bubba was disposed of in front of him, knowing well that if he ran, another toy may catch him. And if he stayed, well...it was obvious that The Prototype had no obligation to keep him alive, now that Catnap has left his side.
By some miracle, Catnap managed to arrive just in time, snatching the dog and leading him elsewhere. Somewhere hidden.
Still, it wasn't an easy escape. The toys made every attempt possible to stop the two. It was as if The Prototype had a personal vendetta against the two.
They were priority targets.
They managed to survive together from there on out, although the dog was rather distraught for the first few days. In fact, the cat had to force him to do basic things. Eat, drink...you name it.
Overtime, Dogday slowly returned to his normal self.
That is...until his mind wandered to the past. As he did now.
Catnap's eyes widened once he heard a whimper escape the dog. He knew exactly what to do, slowly kneeling down as he placed his head under Dogday's chin.
"Memories?"
He asked. The only response he got in return was Dogday placing his hand onto his back. The cat sighed, allowing himself to relax beneath the dog, hoping that it could slowly lull him to reality.
"Breath. It's okay. You're safe. He won't hurt you. Not on my watch."
Tears flooded Dogday's eyes, the only response he could muster up was a pathetic whine. He wanted out. But he couldn't escape his own mind.
"The...the gas. Please."
Catnap frowned. Now that was certainly one thing he hated using on the dog. It felt...inhumane to say the least. Not to mention that the canine would still get nightmares from it on occasion.
"Dogday...you've had enough of that for a week. It'll only make things worse with those nightmares."
Still, Dogday insisted. He wanted a quick exit to this nightmare. He wanted to wake up in a refurbished, colorful playcare. No Prototype. No toys. No hungry minis.
Just a bright, lush field for the eight to frolic in, without a care in the world.
"Please...it's all I have left."
The cat gently rubbed himself against the dog's chin once again, a quiet purr escaping his body.
"You still have me. I'm not leaving."
The canine's eyes focused on the cat's face, his hand slowly beginning to brush the cat's back. Now he could feel it. The cat's soft, rough fur. It was unique compared ti the other critters, but pleasant in its own way despite that.
"You...won't?"
Catnap shook his head. Normally, he'd prefer to look at the situation in a more realistic manner. Truly, he couldn't actually gurantee his own survival. But he'll do anything it takes to survive. For Dogday's sake.
For the time being, he decided to entertain Dogday's wishful thinking. He needed it, after all.
"Nope. In fact, I bet that one day, we'll get to see the outside again. And then we'll get a house, live together...play in the grass..."
"We'll live the life that we've always wanted. How does that sound?"
A small smile crept up on Dogday, his nerves beginning to calm themselves. He felt exhausted, despite the fact that he hadn't actually done anything to bring on said exhaustion.
"...Perfect."
He calmly stated, slowly blinking as he stared up at the concrete ceiling.
He would do anything to see that comforting sun again. But the two knew that they couldn't head back to Playcare. They'd expose themselves, after all.
Maybe one day...if an angel comes to save them.
For now, they could only hope.
And survive.
Together.
