Chapter 2 ~ Data Science 101

Sakura could barely sleep that night. A combination of stress and excitement was overwhelming. This was her dream come true - developing programs that have real-life impact: her code could save people's lives by catching a mob boss! Except, if she messed up, she would waste ample resources of the department. This was big.

She got up early, took a cold shower, and put on her favorite black skirt with a red floral long sleeve top. Stress faded into adrenaline, and she felt ready to start the day. She texted Ino that she wouldn't make it to lunch that day, grabbed some overnight oats from the fridge, and ate it in silence on her couch.

She liked living alone. The peace and quiet. Her life was rather chaotic - during the school year, her friend group would often hang at her apartment for late night study sessions and weekend game nights. During the summers, she always had a job/internship in a tense environment. Either way, coming home to some guaranteed peaceful alone time meant  a lot to Sakura.

She left her apartment around 8:20, and was at her desk by 8:50. Shikamaru was already at his desk, printing out his old senior project per Naruto's request. He greeted Sakura with a wry smile.

"Ms. Haruno?" a man in uniform called from behind her. She turned around to see a vaguely familiar face she had seen around the office.

"My name is Rock Lee. I am in charge of this floor. I am thrilled to meet you!* He smiled ear to ear, grabbed Sakura's hand, and kissed it before she could even react.

"I am fully at your disposal! Naruto-Sama briefed me, turns out all of us are under your supervision today! It is my honor."

"O-oh, hi Lee, thanks. It's nice to meet you too." she gave him a warm smile that made Lee's face turn bright red.

"You're too kind, Haruno-san!"

"Please, it's Sakura. And this is Shikamaru!" she smiled and pointed to her partner. He gave Rock Lee a friendly nod.

"Pleasure! Sakura-San, should we begin?" He ran past Sakura's desk, as well as several other officer's offices and desks to a huge whiteboard against the back wall. He rolled it back to Sakura's desk and stood in front of it.

"Everyone! It's 9:01 AM. It's time to begin. As I already told some of you, Detective Naruto asked us to help out our newest colleague (he pointed to Sakura) all our attention today! She needs help collecting data on Sasuke Uchiha's previous safehouses."

People were slowly gathering around Sakura's desk, everyone looked at her in interest.

"Um, yeah, hi everyone.." she smiled awkwardly. It had been quite a moment till the last time she had to make a public speech like this.

"So, the plan is to compile as many details as we can. You should all have access to case files that contain information about the locations of the abandoned or burned hideouts Naruto discovered after the mobsters got away."

She walked over to the whiteboard, and started writing down bullet points.

"Some things to start with: write down the addresses, surroundings (rural or urban), year built, previous use, owner's name/registration, material made from, proximity to crime scenes, proximity to any major amenities; think highways, water supplies, grocery stores, gas stations. Record the square footage, number of rooms, floors, presence of garage, retail value, last maintenance check, elevation, presence of balcony, chimney. Be creative, every detail could make a difference.

I will share a document with all of you. It already has many feature names in it. If you think of anything important to add, feel free to insert a new column. Please use 0 and 1 for no and yes, use only numerical values. If there is a missing entry, please type in NAN. I will be walking around for technical help. There should be about 313 safehouses over the past 5-6 years. There are around 30 of us, so ideally we would each research 10 of them. Lee will help figure out who looks into which houses.
