the rink was buzzing with activity as chrissy laced up her skates, her breath visible in the cold air. the varsity was already on the ice, running through warm-up drills with a speed and precision that made her heart race. she took a deep breath and stepped onto the ice, feeling the familiar glide of her skates beneath her.

rick skated over to her, a confident grin on his face. "glad you made it, rodgers." he said, his voice echoing slightly in the arena.

chrissy nodded, trying to steady her nerves. "let's just see what you guys have." she felt guilty about all of this, especially with adam's enthusiasm pushing her forward, but she owed it to herself to at least give it a shot.

the practice was grueling from the start. the drills were faster, the expectations higher. chrissy pushed herself, determined to prove she belonged. as the practice progressed, she found her rhythm, her skills shining through. she darted past defenders, executed precise passes, and scored several goals, her confidence growing with each successful play.

but as the drills got tougher, she started to notice something troubling. adam seemed different. he was playing with an intensity that bordered on aggressive.

during a one-on-one drill, adam skated up behind an opponent, hooking his stick around their legs to trip them up. the boy stumbled, barely catching himself before hitting the ice.

chrissy shook off the incident, chalking it up to a moment of overzealousness. but as the practice continued, adam's dirty tactics became more apparent. he checked her hard into the boards during a scrimmage, his body slamming into hers with a force that knocked the wind out of her.

during a break, rick skated over to chrissy, a bemused look on his face. "your boyfriend's got quite the edge, doesn't he?"

chrissy forced a smile, but inside, she felt a growing unease. "yeah, he sure does."

rick watched her closely, occasionally offering pointers, but mostly letting her showcase her abilities. when the practice wrapped up, he skated over to her, his eyes gleaming with admiration. "you really are a natural out there," he grinned. "you fit in perfectly here, chrissy."

chrissy pulled her helmet off, her breath coming in heavy gasps. she looked around at the varsity players, who were giving her nods of respect and encouragement.

rick stepped closer, his voice softer. "we have the everything you need to take your game to the next level. you saw it yourself today. you belong here."

chrissy took a deep breath, the reality of the situation settling over her. she knew rick was right. skill-wise, varsity was where she needed to be to grow, to get noticed, to have a shot at a scholarship.
