it had been days since the party, but the memory of that night still weighed heavily on chrissy's mind. the bitter argument, adam's words, the feeling of everything unraveling—she couldn't shake it. after the breakup, she didn't know what to do, so she'd gone home, hiding away in the bedroom she dreaded staying in, far from the chaos of eden hall.

she had no intention of returning to the dorms right away. connie and julie were already distant, suspicious of her recent behavior, and chrissy knew they wouldn't be eager to see her. the thought of facing them, or anyone else on the team, was unbearable. so, after a cheerleader at the party had dropped her off that night, she stayed home, avoiding the campus and the ducks altogether.

but now, days later, chrissy found herself back at eden. she didn't have much of a choice. she was supposed to be at practice with the ducks, and while she dreaded facing the team, especially after everything that had happened with adam, she couldn't avoid it forever.

the varsity team had scheduled an unofficial (off the record) game with the jv—tensions were high, and the game was going to be anything but lighthearted.

with a deep breath, she stepped into the rink, pulling her gear tighter around her. the chill in the air hit her immediately, but it was nothing compared to the cold reality she was about to face.

the jv team was already gathering near the bench, but her eyes were drawn to the other side of the rink, where the varsity players were warming up. adam was there, his movements smooth and controlled as he skated across the ice, completely focused.

for a moment, chrissy hesitated, watching him from a distance. he looked the same, but everything between them felt different now. there was no more pretending, no more skating over the cracks in their relationship. whatever they had was over.

"rodgers!" a voice called out, snapping her out of her thoughts. it was charlie. he was on the ice, already in his gear, looking at her with a mixture of concern and something else—something softer. "you coming, or what?"

chrissy swallowed, nodding as she grabbed her stick and stepped onto the ice. the cold bite of the ice beneath her skates grounded her, giving her something to focus on.

julie and connie exchanged glances but said nothing. chrissy tried not to think about what they were probably assuming—about her, about adam, about the rumors that were likely swirling around the team.

she knew she had to talk to charlie. the tension after the prank at the dinner was hanging between them like an unspoken wall. she wasn't sure if he trusted her anymore, but she had to clear the air before the game started.

"charlie," she called softly, her voice carrying across the ice. charlie slowed, his skates gliding effortlessly as he approached. "hey," he greeted, his tone neutral but not cold.
