Harry did everything the healer instructed him to. Though his heart broke with every second of it, the brunette denied Draco any sort of comfort or love. The blonde would be clingy, and Harry would push him away. Draco would cry, and the brunette would tell him to stop being a baby. Harry cast a permanent charm on some oven mitts so the blonde couldn't hurt himself with his nails. He upped Draco's potion dose so the veela would be the only one in charge; it could no longer hurt the human side. That only made everything worse. The creature would stare up at Harry like the brunette was everything that mattered in the world; it would make Harry his favorite meals without being asked, build forts for them to lie together as mates, and always shower the brunette with kisses and praise. Harry, in turn, treated the veela like absolute crap, chanting in his head.

It's all for Draco.

This is all for Draco.

As the weeks flew by, the veela started to visibly shrink back whenever Harry was around, used to the idea that their mate doesn't want them and would be happier if they made themselves scarce. Their one, huge bed turned into two small ones. Draco always made sure to sit as far away from Harry as possible on the couch or dining table. The blonde sometimes smiled at himself, thinking he was pleasing his mate this way, but, then, Harry would yell at him for another reason and the veela would let out the most heart-wrenching shriek. The brunette often wondered if it was a warning sign that the end was near.

It's all for Draco.

This is all for Draco.

The veela got hospitalized two months after Harry started treating him badly. It was time. The brunette tried to avoid it as much as possible. He didn't want to acknowledge what was happening, even though the creature was slipping away more everyday, and Harry would often have to stay near it so it doesn't hurt itself. The creature, now, had given up on getting its mate's approval and wanted out of the world. Harry set up an alarm system that would alert him to Draco being hurt, so he could stop the veela from killing Draco's body. The alarm seemed to go off every time Harry shut his eyes. The veela did tried everything to take itself out of the picture; potions, sharp objects, ropes...Harry would stop the creature each time, and the veela would spend the rest of the night wailing and the rest of the day moping.

All Harry wanted to do was hold the veela tightly and never let it go, to tell the creature that he was sorry and didn't mean anything he had said. He knew from experience that Draco would forgive him in a heartbeat and go back to being chirpy; Harry wanted that more than anything. He found himself unconsciously reaching out to the blonde a couple of times when Draco got sad, but the brunette had stopped himself mid-way. After the blonde had been admitted, his condition deteriorated quickly, since Harry barely came to see him. The doctor told the brunette this was the most crucial stage, and that Harry couldn't slip up and give the veela any false hope, so the brunette didn't come into the room, worried he'd break down crying and embrace the dying veela so tightly, he'd break it.

It...

Not him.

Not Draco.

I'm doing this for Draco.

A wild shriek filled the brunette's mind the second he left the hospital room; it was the third time he had visited in a month, and he had only stayed for four minutes that time. Harry dropped to the ground, on his knees, screaming as well, tears flowing constantly down his cheeks as he felt his heart ripping itself apart over the death of his mate, his other half, the creature he was supposed to protect and love more than anything.

Harry sat up with a gasp, looking around him until his green eyes met Draco's concerned, silver ones. It was barely dawn, and he felt like absolute crap. It didn't matter, though, he wasn't planning on going to work today. He'd just send a letter asking to prolong his 'vacation.'

"What's wrong, love?" the blonde asked after cuddling up to Harry and sending calm feelings his way. Harry immediately put his arms around Draco, holding him tightly and inhaling his vanilla-scented shampoo. God, he couldn't imagine living without the blonde.

"I-I had a bad dream," the brunette choked out, to which, the blonde frowned, then pecked him on the cheek.

"Is this about what the healer said yesterday? Whatever he told you about me is wrong. You shouldn't let it get to you like this," Draco said, pulling away a bit to look at Harry. The brunette shook his head, not wanting the veela to blame himself for Harry's bad dreams as well.

"It's not about what the doctor said, but, do you mind if we take a couple extra weeks off work? You were right about the field. I don't want to go out there anymore," the brunette murmured, then felt the blonde nod against his chest. Harry sighed as he looked down at Draco. He couldn't do what the healer asked. He'd never be able to. He had to find another way. The Manor's library was full of Veela-centered books; he and Emmyl were bound to find something sooner or later. Until then, Harry would treat Draco like a king.
