It Can't Come Back

"We need to talk," Ron said as he entered Harry's office without knocking, then threw a pile of reports on the green-eyed Auror's desk, "I can't possibly give these in."

"Why not?" Harry asked with an indifferent tone. He didn't mean to be rude; he truly didn't care about the reports. He hadn't cared about anything for a few days now. Draco still sent Emmyl daily to make sure Harry was fine, but the blonde had stopped writing a week and a half earlier. Just like that, the highlight of Harry's day, his ex-lover's letters, was gone and so was the brunette's motivation to do anything.

"Why not?" Ron asked sarcastically, snapping the brunette out of his thoughts, "Look at the one on top. You literally wrote 'We chased the bad guys and caught them.' as the in-depth summary of the field work."

Harry eyed the report his friend was pointing at for a minute before shrugging. The redhead looked furious, but somehow spoke calmly.

"Break-ups are hard for everyone. I'd kick Malfoy's butt if I could, but Hermione said he didn't tell her where in Paris he lives, so you need to put this aside for now," he said as he pulled up a chair and sat across from the brunette, looking him in the eye, "I get it, alright? You don't want to go to another Reporting Auror because that would mean Malfoy is really gone, but...you're just making it difficult for yourself, mate. If you don't believe me, I guess I'll just have to show you how to write a proper report over and over again until you can do it, yourself. Let's start with this one."

32 reports and two hours later, the brunette had finally had enough.

"Alright! Alright! I'll send my memories to the reporting Aurors so they can do the reports for me. Are you happy, now?" he asked, cross his arms in front of his chest with a huff. The redhead laughed a bit before nodding. Before he left, Ron turned towards Harry and said, "We're having drinks tonight at the leaky. You're coming. No backing out."

The brunette groaned after the redhead closed the door. He didn't feel like going anywhere, but he had been turning down his friends too much lately even though they were being unbelievably supportive. He knew he was being a pain, but he couldn't help it; he just hoped they understood. Nothing made him feel better about Draco being gone. At first, he had thought it was some sort of reaction to being the mate of a veela, but then he discovered that pretty much everyone feels this crappy after a break-up.

Just when he was about to up and leave the office because of how horrible he felt, Emmyl appeared from thin air and shoved a heavy envelope into Harry's hand. The brunette's eyes lit up as he tore the envelope apart and quickly unfolded the papers to begin reading. Draco had written a lot.

Harry,

I'm so sorry I haven't been writing lately. I take it Hermione told you that she ran into me. She didn't say anything wrong, but she brought back memories of my stay at the Home of the Veela that I just didn't want to remember. My soul was dead one moment, then revived, but...the rest of the veelas weren't as lucky, I'm afraid. Hermione wasn't being insensitive by suggesting that working with them might help me move on. Fleur has been dropping many hints that I am "the only one that can get their hopes up" or "the only one who "knows what they're going through." She's right. I am the only one who knows what they are going through, and that's how I know that me being there wouldn't make a bit of a difference. These veelas are hurting, Harry. I was lucky to have you; their mates left them to die. I don't know if they did it on purpose, but I want to rip their hearts out for it. Veelas are born the way they are. They can't help how they react, who their mate is, or who they love. It's destiny for them. It's told to them every day that their job is to care for their mate first, then for themselves. That system is flawed, even if only 0.01% of veelas get rejected. That small percentage needs to be able to find another purpose for themselves. They need to be able to move on from their mates, and the people who reject them shouldn't get to walk away scot-free like this; they are murdering creatures. Yes, veelas aren't human, but they are beings. I was up for nights thinking about all of this, how unfair the world was, how lucky I was to survive. Last night, I thought about doing something about all of this; there should be some law that bans explicit rejection, or at least some awareness of why people shouldn't say no right away. I mean, I know it's a long shot and a lot of people who are rejected aren't veelas...but there still needs to be something. I contacted Fleur again, but she told me that the wizengamot barely recognizes veelas as civil creatures, which doesn't really help our case. To say I was devastated would be an understatement, but it only took me two days to get over it this time. A new idea came to me, a potion-related one. I won't bore you with the details, but if it works, which I hope it does, I think I can prevent this from happening to someone else. Maybe, then, I'll finally be at peace with what happened. I don't know my reasons exactly, but this is helping me get out of bed, so there doesn't need to be a reason. Anyway, how are you? I miss you.

- Draco Malfoy

Harry blinked twice at the letter, then brought it to his chest, not caring that he looked like a silly teenager with a crush. That had been the longest letter either of them had sent since the blonde had left. Draco had both asked how Harry was doing and said that he missed the brunette. This was progress, but...was it an opening? Was Malfoy saying he missed Harry so the brunette would have a way to suggest they get together without it being completely random? Was he telling Harry that it was now okay to see each other?

The brunette decided it didn't matter whether this was Malfoy's intention or not; Harry would go for it, and, if Draco said no, then no harm would be done. So, Harry sent an equally long letter, telling Draco that he missed him too, was proud of him for standing up for the veela community, and was wondering if the blonde would like to meet up. The brunette smiled as Emmyl left the room; he had a good feeling about this.

Draco's blood ran cold as soon as he read the final lines of Harry's letter, in which the brunette was asking if he was free to meet up. He had no idea what would happen if he saw the brunette again. Would the veela suddenly wake up? Would it take over Draco's body again? Would Harry's love and proximity fuel that psycho monster's hope to rip the blonde's soul apart with its talons?

Draco couldn't breathe, but, miraculously, he somehow found the strength to summon a patronus, telling it to find Fleur and sending it off with no message but the blonde's address. He slid down against the wall until he was sitting on the ground, clutching at his chest as if that would get his heart to work again. The woman arrived apparated into the house almost immediately, dropping on her knees in front of Draco and saying something that the blonde couldn't make out. Suddenly, the blonde's head was being tilted and something cool was running down his throat.

Calming Draught

He blinked as soon as he had swallowed the last drop, bringing his head down to face Fleur. She was looking at him with an apprehensive expression.

"I-If I see Harry, will the veela stop being dormant?" he asked with a shaky voice. The witch's eyes widened for a moment before she wacked Draco on the back of his head, causing him to cry out.

"You-you terrified me, you arsehole! I thought your HeartBreak was back," she screamed, giving Draco a death glare despite the prominent tears in her eyes.

"I-I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. I supposed I should've waited until I was level-headed enough to send a proper message," the blonde told her, feeling a bit guilty. She sighed, shaking her head.

"It's alright. I-I just...you're the only one I know who has survived this and-" Fleur started, but trailed off.

"I understand," he said when he realized she wasn't going to finish her statement.

"You're not going to lose control of your body if you meet up with Harry. The veela won't wake up, and you won't spontaneously combust, alright? There are only two ways for it to stop being dormant. Either you consummate your bond with your mate or you take a potion to undo the dormancy." she told him firmly as they both got off the floor. He stared at her, taken back by the information. Though the subject was very uncomfortable for him, he asked whether there was a way for that not to happen if he and Harry were to sleep together, but it turned out there wasn't. Apparently, consummating the bond would bring the veela back in its most 'stable' form. Draco didn't care how stable it was. He didn't want the veela back at all. He thanked Fleur, apologizing to her once more for scaring her before she left. Then, he went to his desk and wrote Harry a response. His hand shook as he brought the pen to the paper. He couldn't decide what to say. On the one hand, he was too scared of the veela ever resurfacing, but...it was Harry. Draco still loved the brunette with all his heart and missed him dearly.

Harry,

I would like that very much.

Do you want to get together on your day off work?

Let me know.
