"rory!" connor calls out to me, waving me over to his lunch table. my eyebrows raise in surprise as i skeptically walk over. "do you wanna join us for lunch today?"

my best friend wasn't here today so i guess it couldn't hurt. but it was sorta random for him to invite me over when we don't usually talk in school.

i set my tray down, sitting next to him. he sat with his soccer friends which i did not know. then a familiar face joined the table. brady nods at me before putting his airpods.

i awkwardly ate my food while the rest of them talked about soccer stuff or school stuff. i really wished i sat alone, cause this was so awkward.

when the bell rang, indicating that lunch was over, i felt a wave of relief crash over me as i rushed off to my next class, dismissing myself from the group.

it was literature, i loved literature. i shared this class with brady though most times in class i see him blanking out, with his airpods in.

i listen attentively to the teacher mostly because i was interested in the subject as i diligently take down notes. literature was easy for me so i enjoyed it.

"since it's a friday, i am assigning you all with a project," the teacher announces, causing the class to erupt in mummers and groans. "you will each read a book, any book, and write an analysis essay on it, due in two weeks."

with that she dismisses us. i pack up my things ready to head back to brady's house. mrs noon says she would pick up madison today before she goes for work so i could head straight to her house from school.

as i walk on the sidewalk, i hear a car honk. i turn while the car slowly comes to a stop. i internally roll my eyes as the window rolls down.

"do you want a ride?" brady asks. i look foward, thinking about the distance i'd have to walk.

i walk over to the passenger seat, getting in. once i was in, he drives off.

we don't have anything to talk about so we sit in silence. we reach a stop sign, and brady jumps at the opportunity to say something.

"were you uncomfortable, just now, at lunch?" he asks.

"sort of?" i answer, truthfully.

he nods, facing foward again. the tension was less as he starts driving again.

"what are you going to do for the assignment?" he asks, keeping his eyes on the road.

"im currently reading a novel, brave new world by aldous huxley," i explain. he nods, though i know he has no idea what i was talking about.

"how does she expect us to read a whole book and write an essay all in two weeks," he complains.

"how long does it take you to finish a book?" i ask, shocked that he thinks it's not enough time.

"like a month," he says as if it's common. "what about you?"

"two weeks."

he rolls eyes, saying about me being a smart show off causing me to laugh.

i think that's the first i've laughed with him for a while.

we reach his house and i went straight to madison's room. she was taking a nap so i decided to use the free time i had to complete my homework.

i walked down to the kitchen table and took out my stuff to start.

i sit at the table until it had turned dark outside.though i still wasn't done since i had a lot to do.

mr and mrs noon were working late tonight so she had left some money to order us some food.

brady comes down, after ordering, so he could answer the door later.

"what are you doing? it's a friday night?" he looks over my shoulder.

"i like to get my weekend homework done on a friday so i can use the weekend for extra credit," i explain.

he mumbles under his breath,'nerd' before his eyes widen at my paper. "holy shit, you finished the essay??"

i nod, like it was no big deal, because it wasn't.

"dude, you have to help me. i don't even know what book to do," he pleads.

i sigh, rummaging through my bag for my spare book. i pull it out handing it to him.

"the notebook?" he reads the title. he hesitates,"you know when i asked if you could help me i meant maybe you could like- i don't know write the essay for me?"

i scoff. i think for a while before compromising,"tell you what, if you finish that book, i will help with the essay." i stress on the 'help' making it clear i wasn't going to do everything.

"bet," he takes the book, walking over to the couch. i shake my head, getting back to my work.

the door bell rings and brady answers it, coming back in with a box of pizza.

"madi, foods here. come down please!" i yell, loud enough for her to hear from upstairs.

she rushes down the stairs, going to grab a slice immediately.

i stop her causing her to frown," have you washed your hands?"

"...yes," she puts on a cheeky smile. i raise my eyebrows at her and she drags her feet to the
sink.

while she was washing her hands, i grabbed a plate, placing a slice of pizza on it for her. she comes back sitting down, next to me eating.

connor and brady walk in too, sitting down and eating the pizza. i cap my pen, packing up my things.

"you're leaving?" madison pouts.

i swing my bag on my shoulder,"i have to go home, madi."

"but, why? can you stay? pleaseeeee," she jumps up and down in her seat tugging at my jacket.

"i'm sorry, but i can't," i pat her head. "but tell you what, when i come tomorrow, ill bring you to the beach," i shoot up my eyebrows, hoping she'd be excited.

she breaks out into an excited grin, nodding her head eagerly.

i chuckle at her reaction, kissing her head, before leaving. connor and brady wave to me as i leave.
