lorelai's pov

"...and make sure to get your tickets to prom! it's only three days away!" janet avery, who was doing morning announcements, says over the P.A system.
i was sitting in the cafeteria, pushing my food around my plate with my fork. i jump in seat when someone puts two tickets infront of my face from behind me. i look up and am met with brady's face.
"i got us two tickets to prom," he says, sitting next to me.
"are you asking me to prom?" i feign shock.
"no, i just got us tickets," he rolls his eyes, turning his body so his legs were under the table and he was facing foward.
"good, cause i was thinking of asking connor," i joke.
"you're not funny," he deadpans.
i laugh, taking my ticket from his hand.
we had made a pact when we were younger that we'd go to prom together, i didn't really know if it still applied since we weren't friends for a few years but things are different now.
"so are we still going to prom together?" he asks, reading my mind.
"yea of course, as friends," i instantly regretted the last part as the words flew out of my mouth.
"uh..right-yea friends," he nods.
i smile, trying to shrug of the weird feeling. being fully honest with myself, i knew that crush on brady never fully went away. but i knew we were just friends and im so grateful we could even be that.
----
i put my stuff in my locker but was stopped as i turned around.
"hey, lorelai. do you have a date to prom?" kyle from my history class asks.
i think for a moment, well brady did say we were just going as friends. "uh no i don't."
his face lights up. "oh-well do you want to go with me?"
"i'm sorry, kyle but i just broke up with-"
"logan yeah i know but still."
"im sorry but no," i walk away.
and that wasn't the weirdest thing today. in my english class, my desk mate, theo, asked the same thing. i said no, for the same reason i had said to kyle. i didn't understand why they had a sudden interest in me when they didn't before. was it because i broke up with logan?
as i was exiting class, i was stopped yet again, this time by danny. he was in my econ class. he was pretty nice and sweet.
"lorelai, are you going... do you have a-"
"a date to prom?" i finish for him.
he nods sheepishly.
"no i don't," i send him a tight-lipped smile.
"do you want to go with me?" he asks. danny wasn't like kyle or theo. he was really sweet. i could tell he was genuine and i didn't have the heart to reject him.
"sure," i smile at him.
"i'll see you then," he smiles back. as he walks away, i see him pump his fists in the air. i shake my head, laughing to myself.
after school was over i headed back to brady's house. madison was drawing in her room, per usual when i arrived.
"hey mads, what are you drawing?" i ask her as i walk over to her desk.
"im drawing you!" she beams. she hold up her drawing, proudly.
i gasp exaggeratively but i meant my compliment."wow! you're really good!"
she blushes. "you can keep it! it's you and brady holding hands cos you're married!"
i scoff laughed in shocked. "married??"
"yes!" she grins mischievously as she giggles.
"we're not married but i will be hanging this up because it's a good drawing," i warn her, teasingly.
she narrow her eyes at me, jokingly.
brady knocks on the doorframe as he enters the room.
"heyy," i greet him.
"hi. by the way, my friend kyle said he asked you to prom. you said no right?" he says.
"yeah....but i said yes to danny," i trail off.
his eyes widen slightly. "you what?? i thought we were going together."
"i thought you said we were going as friends? and i couldn't say no to him. danny's so sweet."
"it's fine, whatever," he brushes it off, but his tone is evident in showing his dislike for the situation.
"i'm sorry-"
he leaves the room, going to his. i internally groan at how we keep moving backwards. it's like every 1 step forward we take, we take 3 steps back.
