❝ 🦋🐬📚🩵❞

i sit at the kitchen table, doing my homework as i snack on some chips. i lift my head when i hear the door unlock and open.

i watch as my dad walks into the kitchen. the bags under his eyes were heavy and he looks visibly exhausted. he runs an inn in town, and he's been working from 6 am today. he used to run it with my mom as the manager, however after she passed, he was left to run the place and he was struggling with it. i wish i could help him because the inn hasn't been doing so well and as much as i know he doesn't want me to worry i can tell he's been struggling with the bills as well, not to mention having to pay for my college tuition next year.

"hey dad how was work," i ask him softly.

"it was alright," he mustered up a smile. he puts his bag on his desk before walking over to me, kissing my head. "goodnight, rory, don't sleep too late."

i nod, getting back to my work while he goes up to his room. i glance back for a while, making sure he got to his room as i could recall countless times where he wouldn't even make it past the couch.

sunlight poured in through the windows, waking me up. i stirred awake, looking around to realise that i had fell asleep on the table. i get up,peaking out the window to see my dad's car gone.meaning he had already gone to work. i sigh, sometimes i wished that i could have at least one weekend with my dad.

i went upstairs, took a shower and changed before going out for a walk. i enjoyed walking around the neighbourhood, observing the community. the houses down our row, puts ours to shame with their beautiful green porches, that bloomed with colourful flowers. ours used to be like that too, but without my mother who used to water and take care of them every day, they turned brown, slowly withering. no one knew flowers as much as she did, she used to tell me about them all the time so no one dared to touch the garden she grew once she had left us.

as i walk i notice madison noon, my neighbour. she sat on the curb right outside the dance studio in her ballet skirt, staring down at the ground solemnly.

"hey, madison. are you okay? is someone coming to pick you up?" i ask in concern for her safety.

"brady is supposed to pick me up, but he hasn't come yet," she answers.

"oh, i could take you home if you'd like?" i offer. ballet classes finished at 10 and it's already 11 so i wouldn't want her to wait any longer. plus i had known the noons since i was in elementary school, so i wasn't a total stranger.

she nods her head, gratefully. i hold out my hand that she takes, lifting herself up onto her feet as we start walking to her house.

she tells me about her day as we walk, then asking about mine in return.

soon we reached her house, luckily it was only 10 minutes from the ballet studio. when we reached her front door, she opens it dragging me in.

"mom! i'm home!" she yells as we walk into the living room where her mom was.

"madi! there you are, i've been so worried. where's brady?" she jumps up from her seat on the couch. her eyes pull away from madison as she notices me. "thank you for bringing her back, lorelai."

"it's no problem, mrs noon," i reply. she was about to say something but then the door opens.

we all turn to face it as brady walks in.

"brady noon, where have you been? you were supposed to pick up your sister from ballet practice," she scolds, awaiting an answer.

"what? no, i told you i had volleyball. isn't it connor's turn?" he says, confused.

mrs noon's face soften as she thinks back."oh, right. i told connor...god twins are so hard to handle," she mutters. she shakes her head before turning back to me. "anyway thank you so much for helping. is it possible if you babysit? since apparently i can't even trust my sons to take care of their sister, while my husband and i are working," she requests, while brady pulls an offended face at her chide at him.

well, i don't mind taking care of madison, she's a really sweet girl and it did get lonely at home.

"i'll pay you don't worry about it!" she adds. i could use the money to help my dad...

"sure i don't mind," i accept.

"thank you, thank you! i only need you here after school from 4-7pm and weekends 8-12 is that alright?"

"that's perfect," i nod.

as i leave i accidentally lock eyes with brady, but that doesn't last long when he looks away almost immediately. i never understood why he had such a dislike towards me, ever since elementary school. brady, connor and i were friends but one day brady told everyone i had cooties and stopped being friends with me, then once we moved on to middle school i drifted from connor as well.

i guess it would just be something i had to deal with.
