"Papà, it's been a night since you slipped into a coma. We're flying back to Sicily now. You'll be home soon. Mamma is waiting for you," I mutter, taking his hand and holding it close, feeling the cold skin beneath my own. I smile faintly as I brush his black hair back, the same color he gave me.
"Please wake up soon. I need you. We all need you. Everyone does. I can't imagine mamma's face when she sees you like this. Jihye would probably hate me and put all the blame on me. You said you wanted to see me get married. How can you witness my wedding if you're like this?" I titter at my own joke, but the sound is hollow.
My father lies unconscious on the private plane, surrounded by full medical equipment. The rhythmic beeping of the machines is the only sign of life. His chest rises and falls slowly, his face pale and peaceful.
"Please, papà. I'm not ready to lose you. Not now, not ever," I whisper, bringing his hand closer to my lips and pressing a kiss on the back of it. Then I feel it—a cold tear trickling down my cheek.
A hand reaches out to me, gently brushing away the stray tear with her thumb. I lean into her soft touch, craving more of the comfort it brings.
"He'll be alright, Minji. I'm guessing this isn't the first time he's been like this, considering all the crazy things your family has involved him in. He's a tough man." Hanni smiles softly to reassure me.
I take Hanni's hand and kiss her knuckles, gazing at her with all the love I feel. "You're going to have him as your father-in-law. He's sure to love you like a true daughter, he already does."
"Yeah, I figured. He's a man with a big heart. Just like you," Hanni says so sincerely.
"Papà, this is Pham Hanni. The one you want me to marry so much. I'm going to meet her parents soon, and we're getting married under the northern lights, I promise."
Hanni lets out a soft chuckle, shaking her head. "That's just our dream, Minji. It sounds so impossible."
"I'll make it possible, just for you," I promise, kissing her hand again. Now, both of my hands hold the two people I love the most—her and my father.
"Amore, do you want to eat something? It might make you feel a little better," she suggests out of nowhere.
I shake my head and smile softly. "Thank you, tesoro, but I'm not really hungry." I stand up from my seat. I hug Hanni tightly and kiss her cheek. "I just need some private time."
Leaving Hanni with the loveliest smile, I move through the cabin of the private plane. The soft hum of the engines fills the space.
I search for Hyein and eventually find her sleeping with Sofia beside her, Sofia's head resting on Hyein's shoulder.
