I've only felt it once, fleetingly, like a full moon disappearing into the night.
I used to live in the dark, cramped rooms of the brothel. I was so young and innocent, I didn't understand my mother's work or why she did what she did, but I knew how much I loved her and how much she meant to me.
She always touched me gently and sang soft lullabies, offering comfort in a harsh world.
Over time, I saw her grow weaker. She tried to hide it, but I noticed her coughing into a handkerchief and losing strength bit by bit.
"Haerin-ah, come here," she called softly.
I'd sit beside her, and she'd stroke my hair, whispering stories of a better life where she wasn't bound to this place.
"Mommy, you're sick," I whispered, touching her cheek. I was so small that I could fit entirely in her arms.
Mother chuckled, stroking my hair. "Don't worry, I'll be alright, sweetheart."
I knew she only said that to calm my little heart. I knew she wasn't going to be okay. I knew she was going to leave me someday.
And I'd be on my own forever.
I didn't know who my father was, and I didn't care. The men who came and went were all the same—faceless, nameless shadows that haunted our lives.
Every day was the same painful repetition until one night, everything changed. I sensed the danger as I sat in the corner of our small room. I scrambled and hid in the closet, like I always did when men came. But that night felt different.
Through the gaps in the closet doors, I watched the door burst open. A group of men stormed in, their faces twisted with malice.
My mother tried to shield me, but they were relentless. I watched in terror as they beat her, their laughter mingling with her cries of pain. They tore her clothes and pinned her to the floor, her screams mixing with their cruel laughter.
"Mommy!" I tried to scream, but my voice was trapped in my throat.
Tears streamed down my face. I couldn't stop crying. My mother was in so much pain that I could feel it too. Everything inside me burned with helpless rage, but I was powerless to save her.
Her body crumpled to the floor, eyes wide open, staring into the void. The life that once flickered in them was gone, leaving only emptiness. All I could do was watch, my heart shattering into a million pieces as I silently begged for it all to be a nightmare.
Just then, a man appeared—a man I barely knew. His eyes cold and sharp.
He shot every single one of the men, blowing their heads off one by one. They all crumpled to the floor, dead, with faces of shock and terror.
