The Summer I Turned Pretty
"STEVEN, I SWEAR TO GOD if you look at that phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket." Laurel warned her son, becoming annoyed.
"What? Lemon's literally been using hers, too!" Steven tried to then throw the blame at his sister, pointing at the girl accusingly.
Lemon quickly dropped her phone into her lap, "I have done no such thing, Steven." She then brought a hand to her heart, playing into her dramatics.
Steven glared at his sister, a grimace settling onto his face.
"We just want to see your beautiful faces." Susannah tried to calm the siblings, "Can dinner be a screen-free zone? You know, like the olden days?"
Everyone stayed silent after that, going back to eating.
"Steven." Jeremiah quietly tried to grab his friends attention, "Dude."
"Miah!" Lemon whisper-yelled, grabbing the boys attention. "Grab his phone." She mouthed as she pointed at Steven's phone.
Jeremiah couldn't help but smirk and nod in understanding before looking back at Steven and giving him a once over look before snatching at the phone, jumping up from his chair to shoot the phone into the basket that sat behind Lemon.
"Are you kidding me!" Steven exclaimed, throwing his hands up.
"Boom, nailed it!" Jeremiah cheered, giving Lemon a high five as the girl let out a happy giggle.
"Okay, okay. We get it, you've been working out." Steven playfully rolled his eyes, crossing his arms as he did.
"You're just jealous 'cause Jere has a better body than you." Belly taunted, smirking.
"Uh, no." Steven gave Belly a weird look, "It's all about the lean look, now. Otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits."
Lemon made a look of disgust at her brother.
He's so weird.
"Tailored suits." Conrad chuckled to himself quietly, shaking his head.
Suddenly Steven's attention was on Conrad, "Oh, dude! When do you leave for training camp, huh?"
Conrad stayed silent, a frown now on his face. He knew Steven would eventually ask him something related to football, he just wished it couldn't have been during dinner.
Jeremiah glanced at Conrad before looking back at Steven, "He, uh, he quit football."
"Wha- wait, really?" Steven's eyes widened.
"Mhm." Conrad hummed in response, nodding absentmindedly as his eyes stared at his plate.
"Are you kidding me, man? I'd- I'd kill to play college football." Steven shook his head, still in disbelief.
"He can always change his mind." Susannah reassured, looking at her son.
"I'm not gonna change my mind." Conrad firmly said, eyes shooting up to look at his mom, wanting her to see that he was serious about his decision.
