That afternoon, while Alex was out gathering supplies, Emma took the opportunity to dig deeper. She searched his apartment, hoping to find something that would either confirm her suspicions or put her mind at ease.

In the bottom drawer of his desk, she found a folder. Inside were documents and photos, but what caught her eye was a list of names. Her heart sank when she saw her own name and photo among them.

Emma's mind raced. Alex was working with the kidnappers. It was all a setup. She felt a surge of anger and fear. She needed to get Lily and get out of there, but she had to be smart about it.

Just then, the door creaked open, and Alex walked in. Emma quickly closed the drawer and turned to face him, forcing a smile.

"Find what you were looking for?" he asked, his voice cold and eyes sharp.

Emma's heart pounded. "Just looking for some paper to write a list of supplies," she lied, trying to keep her voice steady.

Alex stepped closer, his expression unreadable. "Emma, I think it's time we had a little chat."

She backed away, her mind racing with escape plans. "About what?"

"About how you know too much," he said, grabbing her arm. His grip was strong, almost painful. "And how you should have just stayed out of it."

Emma struggled, but Alex's hold was firm. "Let me go!"

He shook his head. "You made this difficult, Emma. But now, we'll have to do things the hard way."

Just then, Lily appeared in the doorway, her eyes wide with fear. "What's going on?"

Emma seized the moment of distraction and kicked Alex hard in the shin. He grunted in pain, loosening his grip just enough for her to break free. She grabbed Lily's hand and bolted for the door.

They ran down the stairs and into the rainy street, Emma's mind racing. They needed to find a safe place, somewhere Alex couldn't follow. She spotted a police station a few blocks away and headed in that direction.

Inside, they found a sympathetic officer, Detective Harris, who listened to their story with a grave expression. "You're safe here," he assured them. "We'll keep you protected and start an investigation immediately."

Emma felt a wave of relief but knew this was only the beginning. Alex and the kidnappers would come after them, and they needed to be prepared.

As they sat in the police station, Emma's thoughts turned to Alex. She had trusted him, and he had betrayed her. But now, she was more determined than ever to bring the kidnappers to justice and protect those who couldn't protect themselves.
