1965:
The next few days followed with his feelings getting stronger. But he was careful enough to hide them away from her, averting every admiring stare from her direction when she noticed. As for Sindhuja, she still did see him staring & smiling despite his concealing. She was waiting for him to accept it, to make the move. She had taken enough efforts to build their relation before, now it was his turn.
One night, he came home late to find her reading a book in the bedroom. He was smiling proudly even as he came in, hands behind his back.
"I have a few surprises..."
"What??" she asked getting up and walking up to him.
He brought one hand to the front, revealing a white piece of paper. A visiting card. She took it and read.
"P. C. Mitter. Private Investigator..." Her eyes lit up with realisation. "Your visiting card?!"
He smiled even more.
"Congratulations!!"
"Thank you very much."
"Did you show it to Kaka?"
"Nope, you're the first person I'm showing it."
"So, now you're really starting in the profession..."
"Yes, finally."
She smiled ear-to-ear. "Great!... Hold on, we need to celebrate this; I'll get something sweet to eat, and keep the card in front of the Puja Ghar (Home-temple) tomorrow morning. We should go to Kaka, and I can go to the kitchen to get sugar-"
"Sindhuja, wait! We don't need to go anywhere. That's my second surprise..."
He now brought the second hand in front of her. It was a tin box. He handed it to her.
"A vote of thanks, for the person who made this possible."
She opened the box and found plump, white Rosogollas inside, floating in sugary syrup.
"For me??!" She asked almost excited.
"Of course! Your favourites, madame."
She quickly popped one in her mouth. Sweet and soft, as always.
"Mmm! Thank you so much!"
"Nope, Thank you. I could never have convinced the family of this without you."
"Come on! Enough with the thanking speech..."
And she popped another one in her mouth. He watched her, eyes taking her in lovingly. She ate the rosogolla, cheeks puffing out like a child. He laughed watching her.
"Ohh, I didn't give you one! Here-" Sindhuja came closer to him and held one to his mouth, but he held her hand refusing. His eyes were fixed on her face.
She had some sugar syrup on the corner of her mouth. So close to him, open hair flying down her back, dark-pink saree leaving its folds and carelessly flowing over her shoulder, she made a sight he could hardly resist. And those eyes.
He lost his sense in that moment and listened to his heart. Pulling her to himself, he held her face in his palm. She gasped at this and looked at him with a confused expression. Before she could say or ask anything, he lowered his face and tenderly kissed on her lips, where the sugar syrup was.
She closed her eyes in the moment when their lips met, taking in the electrifying feeling. But the next moment, they were taken back, and he stared hard to see her reaction. Her eyes went so wide that they might have popped out. When the feeling of what happened settled in her mind, she looked at him in plain disbelief.
He was taken aback by this look from her. Maybe he had done something wrong. Made a mistake.
That's when his brains and sense came crashing down on him.
What have I done!!
