He came inside the room and closed the door. She tried to sit up herself, only to be helped by him in the end. Having settled her down, he too sat on the bed in front of her taking her smaller hands in his own. This now seemed to be his favourite thing to do, look down holding her hands and caressing them.
He slowly asked lifting his gaze up, "Can I kiss you?"
"What!... H-here?"
"There's finally no one around right now. Please?"
She slightly nodded though still unsure of herself.
He gave a small smile, shifted close to her and tucking her hair back, placed a hand on her jaw. Leaning into her, he closed his eyes as their foreheads touched. Their noses rubbed on each other, breath mingling together. And his lips had almost got to hers... When she backed off.
"No. I- I wanted to talk to you first."He blinked. "Okay, no problem..." He had already guessed what this might be.
His fears were indeed confirmed by her. "Mitter babu... I... haven't told you something. I- I was... I was... pregnant."
There was an eerie silence, only the distant cry of some child audible in the room.
"I know."
She sighed looking down.
He asked further, "Why didn't you tell me?"
She sputtered with blinding tears swelling in her eyes. "I- I found out only two days before -this -all this... And... And I wanted to tell you, but you were too busy already. I didn't get enough- time- privacy with you."
He looked at her shaken up. He hadn't realised how oblivious he had been to her through all the case. "Sindhu, oh my god! I- I really didn't mean to-"
She ignored it and locked eyes with him, taking his hand and keeping it on her stomach. "But Mitter babu... I want to know from you... Our baby... is safe right?"
He tried to hide his expressions, turning his gaze away.
"Look at me... "
"Sindhu... Don't..."
"Mitter babu I need to know! I'm swearing you on our child! Tell me what's happened to it!"
He remained silent and looked down.
"No... No! Speak up, tell me in words!"
He finally sighed. "I'm- sorry."
Her grip on his hand loosened as the feeling settled into her disbelieving eyes.
"No, it can't be.... It can't- I-"Head throbbing as if it might explode, she started to cry half from the pain and half from grief. He wrapped his arms around her, but she shook them off the next moment.
"Don't... touch me!...""Sindhu, listen; I really-" He said trying to cup her face so that she looked at him.
But she thundered, "I SAID DON'T TOUCH ME!"
He backed off somewhat heartbroken, though he knew he had to face this some day.
"I was silent until this was just about you & me; but I WILL NOT accept any wrong to our child!"
"Trust me- I regret it more than anything... I don't even know how to apologize to you-"
"Apologize? How many times are you going to apologize?! Will that bring my child back?" She bitterly exclaimed.
"I know, I can't even bring myself to ask for your forgiveness-"
"And I can NEVER forgive you, remember that!..." She glared at him as tears still ran down her eyes. Her headache was getting worse.
He hushed. "Sindhu, Sindhu calm down. You're increasing your own suffering this way!"
"I- Ahh!" She winced clutching the bandage as a blinding pain seared through her skull.
He quickly stood up and reached out to her. "Sindhu! Keep calm, please! You're hurting yourself!" He helped her lie back on her bed as she lost sense of her surroundings. He looked around to call the nurse to help, but she had already slipped into unconsciousness again.
