1964

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon. Tapesh was sitting on the sofa trying to make it through his difficult math homework. His Feluda had gone to Siddhu Uncle (Siddhu Jyatha) for returning borrowed books. Sindhuja had nothing to do, so she sat down besides him.

"Uff, this homework is so difficult! I'm going to need Feluda to help answer all this."

"Why, what's it about? Let me see..." And she took the math-book to read.

"Boudi, it's very difficult. You wou-''

"Oh, quadratic expressions... I've studied these. What are the questions?"

"I'll ask Feluda after he comes, it's alright..."

"There's no fixed time when he would come. And this isn't very difficult, I'll explain. Can I write on this page?" She explained the sums to him, and it all seemed very easy now.

"Whoa, Boudi, you're so smart! If you were in my class, you would've been the topper!"

She smiled and gave the book back to Tapesh. "Maybe. Anyways, you complete it now."

Just then, Srinath came in the hall. "Didi, You're called upstairs."

"Oh, I'll come."

Sindhu went upstairs to Tapesh's mother's room.

"Kaaki, you called me?"

"Yes, come here..."

"Did you need something?"

"No, I don't need anything. You just sit here."

Sindhuja did as asked.

"Sindhu, I've been bedridden like this ever since you came here. But you looked after everyone and handled it all well. "

Sindhuja blushed at this sudden praise and looked down.

"But, I've always been concerned about you. I know how difficult Felu can be sometimes, though I'm sure you will get along with him too. Only you can make him live like a normal person, to settle down properly. Right now, he's a bit distant, but you have to be patient with and understand him. So, even if he doesn't like you now, you need to give him some time."

Sindhu kept looking down, her smile faded away. "I know. I'm trying."

"I am sure he will change his attitude to you. You're such a sweet girl, who wouldn't love you?"

Him. He still wouldn't.  She replied in her mind and sighed.

Later as she thought about their conversation, she wondered to herself.

Will he ever stick his head out of those books?

Will he ever do something for me?

Will he ever appreciate my efforts for the family?

Will he ever care for me?

Will he ever love me, like a husband does in the stories and films?
