The Immortal Misfits: Neon

Chapter 3: Who can you trust?

"Hey..." a feminine voice calls from the dark.

"Uh, hi?" I gotta keep my guard up. In case this is one of the patrons. I think she understood my uncertainty because she reassured me that she's not with them.

A silence fills the air between us. It's so quiet you can hear the bugs walking across the rotting wood we sit beneath.

"I'm Lucile," She begins. "You got quite the light source on you." She motions to my arms.

"Yeah that's hard to explain... I'm called The Neon Freak, but everyone called me Neon."

"Neon? What were you, a performer?" She asked with a chuckle.

"In a sense." We fall silent again.

"What was it like? Being in front of people?"

"It was certainly something... Never a dull day. It was nice seeing all the kids and families come to see us perform. I almost feel bad they had to see what happened to me." She gives me a look of interest.

"What happened?"

I explain the whole event, all the while she looks confused. "So you didn't die from that?"

I realize how crazy I must sound to her, some random guy running from a mob of people, hiding in a dirty warehouse, talking about their inability to die. "It's complicated... You got a family Lucile?"

"Nah, mom died when I was three, dad ran off with his girlfriend."

"That's tough kid. How old are you?" I understand where she's coming from. I never knew my parents.

"I'm 14, turning 15 next month."

"And you live here alone?" I'm surprised she's survived this well. She just gives a nod of acknowledgement. After a bit of thinking I come up with an idea. "Why not come with me?"

She perks up excited yet suspicious. "Are you sure? Can I trust you?"

"That's up for you to decide." With a nod and still some uncertainty, she stands up, takes my hand and we walk out of the warehouse.
