Victoria's pov

I couldn't stop thinking about last night. How relaxed I was with Megan. Usually when I see coworkers, or work associates in her case, I keep a distance but for some reason I let her right in. I have a strict policy against any type of personal relationship with colleagues, but Megan and I just met so there is no relationship. Strictly business.

I was waiting for her office to send over the evidence from the shooting. No arrest have been made, of course. Something about that office is off to me. No one knows, but while I'm investigating Imani Johnson, I am also investigating our corrupt police department. I have brought this issue up with the Captain multiple times, that's why he is not so fond of me. I have constantly complained about the messy work of the department, and he has insisted I stay in a lawyer's place.

I started to flip through all the evidence files that Megan brought yesterday. I noticed she was the one who signed off on all the evidence, which is not suspicious because she is the lead detective, but I did take note of that.

Imani Johnson sure was a clever one. Not a single piece of this evidence can specifically indict her on anything. The best I can do is charge potential accomplices.

I sighed in frustration, but then it hit me. No matter how many failed attempts and waste of police money, Megan never got taken out of this case in the three years. Since the DA is reopening this case, you'd think they'll move forward with having a different detective because the last one didn't succeed. I picked my phone up to make a nice call to the captain but was stopped when my office door opened.

Megan's pov

"We can't meet there no more." I said into my phone. "The leading prosecutor on the case showed up nearly minutes after you left. I'm surprised you didn't pass each other at the door."

"Well if your office didn't have my club closed off, we could've met there but yet again you ain't doing what I'm paying you to do." Imani said.

I was on the phone with her to let her know about last night. The only reason I was at the bar was to meet with Imani. She claimed she didn't put out a hit on me, but I am having a real hard time believing that.

"Look Imani this lawyer ain't playing around. She doesn't even trust the police department."

"Well, you better keep that bitch off me."

"It might be as easy as last time-"

"Look man I don't care what you have to do to keep her off me because I know you don't want me to handle it." Then she hung up. I just rolled my eyes cause she always threatens to hurt someone yet I have never seen her act on it. Minus the night at the club because I know she sent someone for me.

I pull into my destination and quickly head inside. When I get off the elevator I head straight to the main office and walk inside clearly interrupting yet another call.

"I have the shooting evidence." I said with a smile but was met with an annoyed face.

"I said you didn't have to escort it." Victoria said as she put her phone down.

"Well I had to make sure it actually got to your office, since you think we detectives don't do our jobs."

She simply nodded. "You can put it over there with the rest of the evidence and close the door on your way out."

I walked the box over to the rest of the evidence, and then took a seat in one of her chairs. She looked up from the file she was reading and closed it when she realized I hadn't left.

"Look I wanted to apologize about last night. What I said was out of line and we barely know each other, and I crossed a line. I was enjoying our conversation. Talking to you without hating on each other was nice." I honestly spoke. The night I saw Victoria at the club I was attracted to her beauty. Maybe I can use that to my advantage.

"I accept your apology, Megan. My past is kind of embarrassing because I knew what I was doing was wrong, but you're not here for a therapy session." She said with a little laugh before going back to her file.

"Can I ask you a question?" Victoria said.

"Shoot."

"How are you still on the case after Ms. Johnson was let go? I just noticed that your name is on all the evidence, and you're still on the case. The DA switched lawyers, but how come they didn't switch lead detectives?" She said leaning forward tucking her hand under chin patiently waiting for me to respond.

"Well it wasn't easy. Cap didn't want to put me on the case, but since I am more familiar with Imani he let on the case. This is kind of like my redemption." I said only halfway lying. Victoria seemed satisfied with my answer. Her dark brown eyes stared deep into mines as I spoke as if she was fighting for dominance just by looking me in my eyes.

"Do you always do that?" I asked.

"What?"

"Stare into people's eyes like you're casting a spell?" I said smiling.

"I like to look into people's eyes because the eyes never lie." She said with a smirk.

If only you knew.

"I'm sure that works to your advantage because you have beautiful eyes. The type of eyes no one would want to look away from."

She smiled and looked away trying to hide her blushing. She cleared her throat and scooted back. "Well, I have work to do, so if you have anything else just call my office." She said.

"Oh you know by now I prefer coming here." I said getting up. "I'm going to the bar tonight if you want to join me again."

"Umm we'll see." She said as I left her office. I pulled out my burner phone and sent a text to Imani.

I have a plan.
