I look at my mother as a single tear fell down my face. She's gone. I couldn't believe she is actually gone. When I grabbed her hand all the emotions poured out of me. Feeling the coldness of her hand confirmed my harsh reality.

I cried and cried before the nurses had to come in and tell me they needed to move her so my time with my mom was up. I took one last look before I left the room.

My phone rang. I was not in the mood to talk to anyone. Victoria abandoned me at my weakest moment. She has been MIA for weeks and not once has she sent a text or came over to text me. When I go to her building, she always has her secretary turn me away and she is "never home" when I go to her place. And I know her excuse is this dumbass case but she completely ghosted me.

I ignored my phone but it kept ringing so I finally decided to answer it.

"Hello" I said without even looking at the caller ID

"James get down to the station NOW!" it was the Captain and he sounded angry. Before I could respond he hung the phone up. I was in no mood to go to the station nor face people after witnessing my mother take her last breath. But something in me told me I needed to go.

When I arrived to the station all eyes were on me. When I walked in everyone went silent and just stared at me. I looked around confused before I continued making my way to the captain's office. When I got there was the district attorney, Victoria, Toni, and two other DA lawyers. The district attorney was a black woman who just got elected. Her name was Robin McCoy, and when she got elected, she promised to actually lock up criminals because the previous DA dropped the ball on the Imani Johnson case it made it very easy for McCoy to slide in and take the position.

I looked at Victoria and she couldn't even look at me. She kept her head down as I slowly made my way into the office.

"What's going on Cap? Actually before you start I just wanted to tell you I should probably be taken off the case because I am extending my leave. My mom died this morning." I could barely get the last part out without tears forming but I held them back. I also heard Victoria let out a small gasp as she finally looked up at me. Her eyes showed sorrow, pain, and guilt.

"I'm sorry to hear about your mother James, but your leave as of today is indefinite because you are being suspended without pay."

"What? Why"

"My ADA, Ms. Thomas, has brought to our attention that you have ties to the Johnson-Taylor operation. By informing them and helping them escape jail time during your last investigation, and in return Ms. Johnson pays your mother's medical bills." She said as she placed the documents in front of me for me to see, but my eyes couldn't leave Victoria.

"Is that why you've been ignoring me?" I said causing Victoria to look up. She open her mouth to speak but McCoy interrupted.

"Ms. Thomas and Toni also brought to our attention the relationship you and Victoria have, which is a violation because you too are currently working on the same case, but because Ms. Thomas did not let that relationship stop her from bringing this information to our attention my office has decided not to reprehend her. As your Captain, said you will be suspended without pay with a pending investigation. We will be in touch." She said before she gathered her things to leave.

My eyes never left Victoria. As she went to leave something came over me as I got up and stopped her. I stood in front of her blocking her from leaving. She looked up at me as I looked at her. Our eyes were locked as I couldn't find the words to say anything to her. She looked apologetic and I could see the tears she was holding back. I finally blinked and let the tears fall.

"Why did you lie?" I heard Victoria say with so much pain in her voice.

"I was desperate. My mom was going to die-" As I spoke a realization came over me. I wiped my eyebrow and stepped aside. "I'm sorry" was all I could say as Victoria looked at with hurt and confusion. She wiped the single tear that fell as she walked out of the office.

"James, I know this is a hard time for you, but I am disappointed in you. If you were having hardships, we could have worked something out for you and your mom, but instead you went and made a deal with the devil." Captain spoke then he came from around his desk.

"Take this time to heal. We will try and work something out, so you don't end up behind bars. Now I need you to turn in your badge and gun."

I know my face is probably a mess from all these tears. I am disappointed in myself as well. My dumb decision to work for Imani rather than turning her in ruined my life. The whole deal was to keep my mom alive and now she is gone.

And now so is Victoria.
