Megan's pov
I sighed as I walked into my house after a long day at the hospital. These past couple of weeks have been the absolute worst. My mom's cancer is back, and it is worse than last time. The doctors are saying she might not have long left to live.
I have been between work and the hospital all week and haven't really seen Victoria, but even if I tried, I couldn't really see her because she is so consumed with this Imani case that. I wouldn't say she is avoiding me, but our conversations have been very brief, and according to Toni, Victoria won't even tell her what is even going on with the prosecution of Imani. Technically, with the arrest of Imani all our heavy lifting is done and is in Victoria's hands, so I haven't been sweating it.
My phone dinged and I looked down to see a text from Victoria stating she is on the way over. I was shocked because when she gets in the zone, she kind of shuts people out which could be an issue if I wasn't so focused on my mom right now.
Not even ten minutes later Victoria was at the door. When I opened the door, I was shocked to see her hair cut short into a bob.
"I like your hair." I said as she walked past me without even greeting me or asking to come in. I just closed the door as she went to put her stuff down.
"What's going on?" I asked as I went to approach her.
"This case is becoming too much for me. Not only can we not get Imani to flip, but apparently someone on your team has been working for her." As she was speaking, I went to grab her hands but when she dropped the bomb that there might be a mole I instantly stopped.
"Wait what?" I asked knowing I hear her as clear as day. Little does she know she is talking to the mole.
"During my interview Imani basically implied she has someone on the inside. I have only told you and Toni."
"Toni? Toni said you wouldn't tell her anything."
"Well, I told her while you were on leave for you mom. I don't know why she didn't tell you."
"Yea, well do you want me to look into it?" I asked because I need to know where she is at so I can stop her. I like Victoria but I don't want this to hurt our relationship. Hell, I can go to jail and she would be the one to prosecute me.
"No I got it."
What does she mean by that?
Victoria reached up and wrapped her arms around my neck and I grabbed her waist. She looked me in my eyes. I know humans don't have powers, but it is like Victoria has the power to read people and no matter how hard you try to fight her stare you cannot look away.
"Is she getting any better?" she said moving one of her hands to caress my cheek. I knew she was referring to my mom.
My face dropped because she was getting worse. Victoria noticed the change in my emotions, and she pulled me down to hug me as she let out an aww.
I spent the night crying my eyes out to Victoria but when morning came, she was gone.
Victoria pov
I sat at my desk analyzing the bank statements I got from one of Imani's businesses. Everything looked in order from obvious inventory orders, but one payment was off.
Good Samaritan Hospital
Monthly payments to the hospital were weird to me. What's even weirder was that is the hospital that Megan's mom is currently in. I didn't want to jump to conclusion because I was hoping that Imani had a family member or something in that hospital. However, last night when I went to Megan's place, I had just received these documents, and I wanted to get a read on Megan. I knew I didn't want to tell Megan about the mole but after finding these payments I had to test her.
I picked up my phone to make a phone call.
"Well well to what do I owe this pleasure?" she said when she finally answered the phone.
"Hello Janelle. I know we didn't end on the best of terms thanks to me."
"Yea thanks to you." She said, interrupting me. I held back the read I already had prepared because I needed her help.
"I need your help with something, and before you know it is for a big case that I am working on."
"Oh the case you were working on before you left me to go fuck on the detective."
I internally sighed "Yes that one."
"What exactly do you need from me." I knew she would help me no matter how mad she is at me.
"Can you check and see what bill Johnson LLC is paying? Once you find it text it to me-
"Text? Now you know I cannot do that because that is a major HIPAA violation."
"Please I work for the DA you won't lose your job. Please do me this favor and I'll take you out for lunch sometime."
"Fine."
"Thanks" I said hanging up because I know she will try to talk about getting back together and I am not in the mood to hear a grown woman beg.
About 20 minutes went by before my phone dinged. It was a picture of payments to a patient.
When I saw the name of the patient, time went still as my phone slipped out of my hands. I had my suspicions after last night, but I wanted to believe I was wrong.
But I wasn't Megan is the mole.
