REEF LEFT HER SPOT like her life depended because in her eyes it did, Mizzen was her entire world and she needed more than anything to get him home, he was a sweet and innocent young boy who didn't deserve this.
As Reef ran over to Mizzen the young boy looked around confused about what to do a majority of the Tributes began to run into the tunnels and stands, Reef reached Mizzen very quickly and pulled him into a tight embrace before pulling away and crouching down to his height.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?"Reef questions a small amount of panic in her voice as she surveys her young friend's face for any cuts or bruises.
Mizzen frantically shakes his head. "No, I'm okay. I think most of the Tributes made a run for it"Mizzen explains.
Reef sighs with relief as she stands up. "Guess nobodies in a fighting mood"Reef gusses.
The pair from Four slowly make their way over to the pile of weapons that lay against some fallen rubble, the tridents that had caught Reef's attention just a few minutes ago still lay haphazardly against the rubble. Reef picked one up a sense of confidence washed over her with her best weapon in hand she now had a real chance of completing her goal.
Getting Mizzen home, it's not like Reef didn't want to go home herself because she did it's just only one of them was getting out of this arena alive and if it was going to be anyone then Reef wanted it to be Mizzen the small thirteen year old still had his entire life in front of him and he deserved to live it.
"We should properly go find Tanner"Mizzen speaks up pulling the older girl from her thoughts.
Reef wordlessly hands the other trident to Mizzen he grips it tightly like he's worried he'd lose it.
"Yeah, we should"Reef responds a look of confidence on her face.
The pair from Four enter the tunnels to find their partner from Ten.
THE TUNNELS WERE dark and mysterious like catacombs and tombs from the stories that Reef's papa would tell her, if they weren't in a life or death situation Reef would happily spend all day exploring down here. History and mysteries were something that Reef enjoyed a lot.
"It's dark down here"Mizzen says, barely above a whisper.
"I know, Little fish but we'll be okay"Reef tells the younger boy reassuringly.
The pair then continue to walk in silence their footsteps echo off the walls around them, a hand enters her own and she doesn't even need to look to know it's Mizzen, the reality of the situation has truly set in but there is no going back now.
One goes home alive and the rest go back in body bags.
"I hope we find Tanner soon"Mizzen pipes suddenly.
Reef stops a look of confusion falls over her face as she crouches to Mizzen's height. "Why's that?"she asks curiously.
"Someone to protect you"Mizzen responds innocently.
A sigh escapes the older girl's lips as she makes eye contact with her District partner and places a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Listen to me Mizzen, I don't need protecting not by Tanner or by you. It's my job to look out for you, do you understand?"Reef questions.
Mizzen looks down at the ground a look of embarrassment floods his face he understands that Reef is fully capable of protecting herself he wishes the stubborn girl would let someone else do the protecting for once.
"I understand"Mizzen mumbles quietly.
Reef takes hold of his hand once again and the pair begin to walk down the tunnels, they continue their hunt for the boy from Ten but given the size of these tunnels it could take quite a long time.
But they had the time.
IT WAS THE SOUND OF SHOUTING that alerted Reef and Mizzen to the location of Tanner, they could hear his raised voice from a mile away and they began to run in the direction from which it was coming, when they arrived on the scene Tanner was being cornered by the pair from Three who had pieces of broken drone in each of their hands.
"Get hell away from him"The voice of Reef calls out, the pair from Three turns, and their faces pale as they see the girl from Four.
"We weren't trying to hurt him or anything"Teslee tries to explain her voice cracking in fear as she speaks.
"Then walk away"Reef responds bluntly.
The pair from Three turns and looks at each other, mentally agreeing to take the offer as they both know they won't get a second chance if they run into the group again, they quickly run into the tunnels their footsteps echoing along the ground in the process.
"You okay Tanner?"Mizzen asks wanting to make sure his friend is okay.
Tanner ignores Mizzen and turns straight to Reef. "You should have killed them"Tanner tells her.
Reef rolls her eyes. "Why?"Reef asks.
"Less competition"Tanner explains.
Reef scoffs. "Dehydration and hunger will take them out way before we need to"Reef explains to him she has great respect for all the tributes but some were bigger threats than others and the pair from Three weren't one of them.
"Have it your way Four"Tanner tells her as he storms off down the tunnels going in the opposite direction to the pair from Three.
"What's his problem?"Mizzen questions.
Reef sighs. "Properly annoyed I had to save his ass"Reef explains.
The pair from Four follows the boy from Ten down the tunnels, and the atmosphere in the tunnels is very tense Reef cant see this alliance lasting very long if Tanner keeps up his attitude, they need to be on the same page if they want to stand the best chance of being the final three and whatever happened after that was up for the gods to decide.
Reef was willing to do whatever it took to get Mizzen home, there was no line she was unwilling to cross to achieve that.
