Today, I am excited to share enlightening insights from the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding the initiation of night prayer:
It was narrated that Asim bin Humaid said: "I asked Aisha رضي الله عنها with what the Messenger of Allah would start the night prayer. She said: 'You have asked me about something that no one else has asked me about. He used to say Allahu Akbar ten times, and Subhan-Allah ten times, and Astaghfir-Allah ten times, and he would say, “O Allah, forgive me, guide me, grant me provision and give me good health”, and he would seek refuge from the difficulty of the standing on the Day of Resurrection.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith Number 766)
Here are some profound lessons and benefits we derive from this hadith:
1. Embrace the Honor of Night Prayer: The night prayer (Tahajjud) holds a special place in the heart of a believer. It is a means to draw closer to Allah SWT and attain His mercy and forgiveness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, out of his love for us, consistently performed the night prayer and encouraged us to do the same.
2. Diverse Duas and Supplications: This hadith highlights the variety of supplications the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used at the beginning of his night prayer. These include praising Allah, seeking forgiveness, and asking for guidance, provision, and good health. It teaches us the permissibility and the importance of personalizing our supplications in our worship.
3. Seeking Refuge in Allah: The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah from the difficulties of standing on the Day of Resurrection. This reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah's protection and guidance in all aspects of our lives, both in this world and in the Hereafter.
May Allah SWT accept our prayers and supplications, and grant us the strength and sincerity to consistently perform the night prayer. May He bless us with His mercy and forgiveness in this world and the Hereafter.
