The Special Blessing of Tahajjud: A Sacred Connection with Allah
Introduction
Tahajjud is one of the most intimate and powerful acts of worship in Islam. It is a voluntary night prayer performed after waking up in the last third of the night, at a time when the world is silent, distractions are minimal, and the soul is most connected to its Creator. In this special moment, it is just you and Allah—the One who created you, provides for you, and to whom you will return.
When life feels overwhelming and your heart is heavy, remember: you have Tahajjud. It is an open invitation from Allah, calling you to rise from your comfort, step away from your bed, and turn to Him in sincere supplication.

The Invitation in Surah Al-Muzzammil
Surah Al-Muzzammil is one of the earliest revelations given to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It carries a powerful message, calling him—and by extension, all believers—to the night prayer.
Allah says:
"O you who wraps himself [in clothing], arise [to pray] the night, except for a little—half of it, or subtract from it a little, or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation."
(Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:1-4)
In these verses, Allah lovingly calls upon His Prophet (ﷺ) to unwrap himself from his blanket and stand in prayer. This is not just a command; it is an invitation to something greater—a spiritual retreat with the Divine.
Why does Allah emphasize Tahajjud? The answer comes later in the Surah:
"Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words."
(Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:6)
Tahajjud is special because, in those quiet hours, the distractions of life fade away, the heart softens, and words flow more sincerely. It is in this solitude that one finds the truest connection with Allah.
What Makes Tahajjud So Special?
1. The Quiet of the Night
The last third of the night is unlike any other time. The world sleeps, the streets are empty, and there is a peaceful stillness in the air. In this calmness, the mind is clearer, and the heart is more open to absorbing the beauty of worship.
Allah describes this moment as a time of tranquility and closeness:
"And during a part of the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is obligatory upon you; perhaps your Lord will raise you to a station of praise and glory."
(Surah Al-Isra 17:79)
This "station of praise and glory" refers to the high rank that one attains through sincere devotion in the night prayer.
2. A Time When Duas Are Answered
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and says: ‘Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me so that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?’"
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1145; Sahih Muslim, 758)
This Hadith highlights one of the greatest blessings of Tahajjud: Allah Himself is calling upon His servants, waiting for them to turn to Him. It is the time when prayers are most likely to be answered.
3. The Best Cure for a Troubled Heart
Life is filled with challenges—stress, heartbreak, uncertainty, and struggles. But for every hardship, Tahajjud offers a remedy.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"Hold fast to the night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you, it brings you closer to your Lord, it is an expiation for sins, and it prevents wrongdoing."
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 3549; Hasan)
In the darkness of the night, tears flow freely, and the burden of the heart is lightened. No matter what you are going through, Tahajjud is a place to pour your worries to the One who listens and responds.
How to Pray Tahajjud?
1. Wake Up in the Last Third of the Night
The night is divided into three parts. The best time for Tahajjud is the last third, which is approximately 2-3 hours before Fajr.
2. Pray at Least Two Rak‘ahs
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The night prayer is offered as two rak‘ahs followed by two rak‘ahs.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 990; Sahih Muslim, 749)
You can pray as many rak‘ahs as you wish, even if it is just two.
3. Make Du‘a with a Sincere Heart
After completing your prayer, take a moment to raise your hands and call upon Allah. Ask for what your heart desires.
4. End with Witr Prayer
It is recommended to conclude with Witr, an odd-numbered prayer (1, 3, 5 rak‘ahs, etc.). The Prophet (ﷺ) never missed Witr. (Sahih Muslim, 738)
Tahajjud: A Gift for Every Believer
Tahajjud is not just for the righteous or scholars—it is a gift for every believer. You do not need to be perfect; you only need sincerity. Allah does not ask for long hours of standing—even waking up for a few minutes and making du‘a can change your life.
Remember:
If you struggle to wake up, ask Allah for help.
If you miss it, try again the next night.
Even if you wake up late, say a quick du‘a before Fajr.
Final Thoughts: When Life Feels Like It’s Falling Apart, Remember Tahajjud
Life is unpredictable. At times, it feels like everything is crumbling around you. But there is one thing that remains constant: your ability to turn to Allah.
Tahajjud is your secret weapon. It is your refuge, your healing, and your direct connection with the Most Merciful.
So tonight, when the world sleeps, rise. Unwrap yourself from your blanket, stand before your Lord, and call upon Him. Because in that moment of solitude, you are never truly alone—Allah is with you.
"And be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night exalt Him and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied."
(Surah Taha 20:130)
May Allah grant us the strength to wake up for Tahajjud and experience its blessings. Ameen.
