The Devotion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Night Prayer: Insights from Hadith
Today, I am delighted to share insights from a profound hadith narrated by Asim bin Humaid, based on the words of 'Awf bin Malik, regarding the night prayer (Qiyam-ul-Lail) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
'Awf bin Malik reported, "I prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, and when he bowed, he stayed as long as it takes to recite Surat Al-Baqarah, saying: 'Glory be to the One Who has all power, sovereignty, magnificence and might.'" (Sunan An-Nasa'i, Hadith Number 1049)
Let's delve into the benefits derived from this profound hadith:
1. Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ Devotion: The hadith underscores the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ unparalleled devotion and dedication to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ through the night prayer. Despite his exalted status and forgiveness of past and future sins, the Prophet ﷺ maintained a rigorous practice of standing in prayer, demonstrating his profound gratitude and humility before Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
2. Effort and Sacrifice: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's extended bowing during the night prayer exemplifies his deep spiritual engagement and sacrificial effort in worship. His prolonged acts of devotion serve as a profound example for us to emulate, encouraging us to invest time and effort in drawing closer to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ through consistent and heartfelt prayers.
3. Permissibility of Repetition in Supplication: The Prophet ﷺ's repetition of the supplication "Glory be to the One Who has all power, sovereignty, magnificence and might" highlights the permissibility and efficacy of repetitive supplications in worship. It underscores the importance of humility and submission before Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ, seeking His blessings and mercy through heartfelt and sincere invocations.
May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ grant us the strength and sincerity to emulate the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ devotion in our worship, and may He accept our efforts in seeking His pleasure through heartfelt prayers.
JazakAllah Khairan,
