Rebecca was sleeping in the backseat of the Mercedes Benz as Richard drove them home to Virginia. Nigel was gazing at his engagement ring and thinking about Faith Lane and the woman who said she was her wife.
" She said that the marriage was not legitimate ," Nigel said as he looked suddenly at Richard. " What do you think she meant? "
Richard shook his head. " Not sure. If she calls I can find out more information but I'm not a divorce lawyer. I'm a money man. I know taxes and money and business matters. It's what I am comfortable with. The most I can do is assign one of my lawyers to her case. Which I will if there's a basis for it. And if she wants a divorce. "
Nigel drummed his fingers against the glove compartment. " Why does every dinner seem to have Faith drama? ," he pondered. " She did apologize to me. Which was big of her. I'm not one to hold a grudge. Much. I don't like that woman. Melinda Velez. She threatened you. "
Richard cut his eyes over to Nigel for a brief second before returning back to the roadway. " I don't think so. She is full of hot air. I'm not scared of her. Let's not talk about her or Faith. Do you want us to walk down the aisle together or you walk by yourself? Or do you want me to walk to you ? I'm fine with anything and everything. "
Nigel smiled and leaned his head back against the seat. He yawned slightly. Like his future step daughter he was feeling tired. In fact he had been really tired the past few days. " I fancy us walking together. It should be Spencer first. Then your father. Then our princess back there in a beautiful dress and shoes that I am going to buy her on Monday. I need her dress size. And her shoe size . If Sarah doesn't let her be in the wedding..... I'm going to buy a cute little basket Monday and get red , no, pink rose petals to put in it. Then us. I want to walk into our new life together. "
Richard smiled. " I like that. All of it. Especially the new life together. And Sarah will not cause trouble. Trust me. Theodore plays the violin. He's pretty good. I think he should play some type of love song as we walk down the aisle. I've always hated the wedding march. "
Nigel sniffed and rubbed the side of his nose. " I like that. I can't stand the wedding march myself. All that dum dum dum stuff gets old fast. We'll need to think of good songs tonight. Do you think we can get the church on Wednesday? Are we moving too fast? "
He felt like he had to blow his nose and reached into his jeans pocket for a tissue. But when he blew his nose and then looked at the tissue he was surprised to notice a small amount of blood. That was odd. He never had been prone to nose bleeds before.
Richard said," There should not be any problem getting it. I've made several big donations to the church and the minister Reverend Smith seems to like me well enough. " Again he looked over at Nigel and then turned back to the roadway. "Are you alright? "
Nigel wiped off his nose. " I'm fine. It's just a nose bleed. Not bad though. I'm tired. "
He closed his eye wearily.
Richard bit his lip. He suddenly had a cold shiver overtake him. Like some one had just walked over his grave.
" Nigel, I love you. "
Nigel smiled but still kept his eye shut. " I love you too. Stop worrying. It's just a nosebleed. And I'm tired because it's been a busy day. "
Richard said almost offended," I'm not worrying. I don't worry. "
Nigel's smile grew. Richard was so cute when he fibbed.
