DuBuis was tired. He was grouchy. He was still irritated over the dinner last night and the revelation that his baby sister was now married. Married and he had not even known it. Married to an obnoxious woman that he really didn't like or trust. There just was something unsavory about the woman. Even Spencer had said that last night as they had discussed the situation in bed. Well DuBuis had raged about it and Spencer listened.
He was also irritated that his sister was ducking his calls and texts.
" Who took all the damn coffee and didn't make a fresh pot ! ," he hollered in the nurse's station in the emergency room where he worked. " Why is it always empty? Why do I always have to make it? "
Angel Anderson in his Powerpuff Girls medical scrubs and bright purple running shoes turned around with a laughing smirk on his handsome face. " Is it that time of the month, Dr. Lane? ," he teased wryly. " You know these lazy fools around here think they have servants in you and me. I would have made it but I didn't feel like it. "
" Well I'm not making it ,"DuBuis snapped tersely. " I'm on strike. "
The small trimly built nurse looked at DuBuis with amusement on his face. " Fight with the hubby? Well , the day gets better. Or , worse if you think about it. There is a man in room four who has a..... wait for it ..... curling iron stuck up his ass. Don't ask why. I regret asking. Because he told me. Nice ass though. I may get his number. "
DuBuis grumbled," I quit. "
Then his phone rang and he pulled it roughly from one of the pockets in his lime green scrub pants. " What? ," he snapped.
Reverend Lynn said with much surprise," DuBuis. Is this a bad time? I can call back. "
DuBuis sighed and ran his hand over his face. " No. No. It's fine, Lynn. What's up? "
She hesitated before speaking. " Well. Your family doctor just faxed me the results of your physical exam and blood tests that I wanted to rule out anything physical. It looks good. Really good. You are in excellent health for a man of forty. So I am more certain that you do have bipolar depression. Which is easily treatable. I think we should start you with regular therapy sessions with me. And I'm going to refer you to a psychiatrist colleague of mine for medication. I think an antidepressant and an antipsychotic should help ease those symptoms of yours. Have they gotten worse? Better? "
DuBuis swallowed hard. He had been expecting this but he really didn't know how to feel about it. How was this going to affect his life? His career? His family? His marriage? What would Spencer say about this? He sighed. " They're about the same. Can I work like this? Will this mean I can't be a doctor? "
Angel's head lifted slightly from the patient chart he was reading through and looked at his friend in concern.
Reverend Lynn said," I don't see any reason you shouldn't be able to continue as a doctor. Especially with medicine and therapy. It's a hurdle but not one you can't learn to handle. How have you been lately? "
DuBuis said," Not good. Can we schedule a session? Maybe this week? "
" No problem. I have an available time for this Friday. Two works for you? "
" Yeah. That's fine. Thanks for letting me know, Lynn. I'll see you Friday. Bye. "
He hung up and sighed deeply again as he leaned back against the wall.
Angel put his hand on DuBuis's shoulder. " Everything ok ? You need to talk? "
DuBuis smiled slightly with a tinge of sadness edging it. " It's fine. Thanks for asking though."
Angel said," I'll make a pot of coffee. "
