*Kerry's POV*
Lightning flashed across the sky and another crash of thunder shook the ground. "Hurry up, Kerry!" Sam called from under the concrete bridge, holding my jacket tightly around her shoulders. I pulled my bike over onto the grass and ran out of the rain with Sam. Everyone in town knew that was my bike, because I was the only person with a sticker that said "Bigfoot Doesn't Believe In You Either".. Yeah, Joey slapped that on when I wasn't looking.. Least it was better than the "Horny Old Goat" sticker he slapped on Officer Dylan's personal truck.
"Better get comfortable, this could last a while.." I told Sam, sitting down next to the wall "How long do you think we'll be here?" She asked, sitting down next to me "Just until the lightning passes, once it does, I'll get you home. I promise." I answered, seeing her nod in response. "Kerry? ... Did they not want me hanging out with them..?" She asked me, tears mixing with the rain water running down her face "No.. No, I'm sure that isn't the problem.. Maybe they just forgot and thought you would meet them there." I answered... I just can't believe that they left without even saying anything to her. I'm definitely gonna be talking to my sister about that shit tonight and try to get an explanation.
I noticed every time it thundered, Sam would jump.. Then I remembered that she was always scared of storms.. How could I forget that? I put an arm around her and held her close while she hid her face on my chest, shaking like a leaf. "Soon as the storm lets up, I'll get you home. Might get wet from the rain, though." I told her "I'm fine with the rain.. It's just the storm.." She answered.. Sidney and Sam lost their parents in a car crash during a bad storm when Sid was 11 and Sam was 8.. That's why they were living with their uncle, Sheriff Travis Munroe. He did a great job raising those girls on his own, I will admit.
"Kerry?" I heard, looking over to see Sam was looking at me "Yeah, Sam?" I asked "Why didn't you go with Leah and Jess?" She asked "You kidding? Last place I wanted to be was stuck following my sister and Jess around carrying shopping bags that each weighed like ten pounds. Last time I went with them to the mall, Jess tried to act like I was her boyfriend.. Nah, I'd rather be here." I answered, making her chuckle "You'd rather be stuck under a bridge in a thunderstorm with your bike out by the road?" She asked "Well, yeah. My bike can be dried off, I don't have to worry about breaking my shoulders.. And, at least here, I'm in good company." I answered, seeing the look on her face. She looked genuinely surprised.
"Really?" She asked "Sam, we've been friends since 5th grade, would I lie to you? Ever?" I answered in question, causing her to smile "Even if I only got to meet you because I got held back." I told her "And because I skipped a grade." She added, causing us both to get a good little laugh out of it. She looked at me with a smile and I looked back, returning the same expression.. She looked so beautiful when she was drenched from the rain.. No, Kerry, what are you thinking? That's your best friend!
I looked out past Sam and noticed that the rain hadn't stopped.. If anything, it had picked up even more.. But, the thunder and lightning had stopped "We should get you home while the lightning is gone." I said awkwardly, helping her off the ground "Good idea." She replied. I ran out ahead and got on my bike, starting the engine and waving her over. I wasn't gonna make her wait in the rain for me to get this thing started, what if it wouldn't have started at all? Sam climbed on behind me and held on, wrapping her arms around me once again.
I couldn't go as fast on the wet roads, but I did go fast enough to pull up into her yard before the thunder came back for round two. We ran up onto her porch and she fumbled for her keys "Thank you for the eventful afternoon, Kerry. Regardless of my irrational fears, I had a great time with you.. And thank you once again for the milkshake." She told me "Hey, you don't have to thank me, Sam. I'll take you out again anytime you want." I told her, not realizing how it sounded until after I had already said it. She smiled and actually kissed my cheek. "I'll remember that." She replied, her face a little red.
"Do you wanna come inside and wait out the storm?" Sam's muffled voice asked me as I snapped myself back into reality "I would, but I gotta get back to the house. I promised my mom I'd be there when Leah got home. Plus, it'll give me one more ride in the rain." I answered "Then at least wear your jacket." She told me "I'll be fine, I'll get it tomorrow when it isn't raining." I assured her "You are a stubborn man, Kerry Bennett." She said as I chuckled "You know you love me for it." I replied, seeing her smile "Yeah.. Guess I don't have much of a choice, huh?" She joked before opening the door "Well.. I'll see you tomorrow?" She asked "You got it." I answered.
She quickly came back and hugged me tight, reaching up and wrapping her arms around my neck as I wrapped mine around her waist. One thing about Samantha Munroe was that she gave the best hugs, hands down.. Honestly, I hated to leave.. But, of course, I had to be home when Leah got there. You know, I'd be lying if I said that, as much as I loved my sister, I didn't sometimes wish that I was an only child..
