"W-We've confirmed, Master Childe. It seems both Miss Soleil and her informant have left the night before and went to Seirai."
"Dammit!"
Crash!
The Fatui soldiers kept their heads low as splinters of the broken table flew from underneath the Harbinger's fist. The table cracked into two uneven parts, its legs bent and broken under sheer force.
A dark shadow veiled Childe's already dull eyes. He turned to the soldiers standing by, a murderous glare intensifying by the minute.
"There's over a hundred of you patrolling the camp. There's only one entrance and exit into this place," Childe spoke angrily, "How is it that none of you ever noticed the both of them leaving at all?!"
That was when they knew his fury could not be quelled by excuses. As if sharing a collective thought, the present soldiers dropped to their knees and bowed their heads.
"We were careless, Master Childe! We'll gladly accept our punishment!" they said resolutely. Childe sneered.
"Punishing you at this time won't do us any better. Forget it," Childe exhaled, releasing his anger with a sigh but his frown never faded away.
It's not beyond their abilities to get away unnoticed. But I told her to wait until morning. Apparently, she was too angry to sleep it off, he thought.
"What's the estimated time they left?" Childe asked. "Miss Soleil skipped dinner last night, but her informant was still here," a lieutenant replied, "Our guess is that they left around midnight."
"Then it's been seven hours and we haven't heard from them," Childe tapped his foot on the ground impatiently.
With the two armies in Seirai, they must've been...
"Ahh, you're going to be my cause of death, woman!" Childe groaned exasperatingly. The soldiers didn't need to think of who he was talking about.
"...Should we launch a rescue operation?" Javert asked. "Not yet," Childe picked a few papers from the untouched table at the other end of the tent.
Those were details of possible locations where their opponents might have set up their base. But they were written before taking the Shogunate's additional involvement into consideration. Childe was not keen on acting based on Soleil's notes and previous deductions.
"They wouldn't try to hurt her, would they?" Javert muttered worryingly. "No. Soleil is too valuable for them to recklessly touch," Childe glowered, "But if they ever dare to put as much as a scratch on her body, the 'no killing' policy will be nothing but a joke."
He smothered his face with his hands, trying to calm himself. Think, Ajax. What would she do if she were in your situation and how would she use it to her advantage?
He's never been in a situation where he had to consider a decision so carefully until that time. Childe swam in his thoughts, searching for answers beneath the murky waves of anxiety.
"Master Childe."
"What?!" The Harbinger snapped at the Electrohammer Vanguard coming into the tent. The large man flinched at Childe's tone and bowed his head.
"T-There's a message sent for you," he said. Childe waved a hand, prompting Javert to approach the Electrohammer and take the letter.
Javert examined it. "It has the Fatui's seal," he said in surprise.
"I thought the Sakoku Decree prevents anyone from getting in or out?" Childe raised an eyebrow. "Unless it's from one of ours that's already inside Inazuma..." Javert muttered.
