A disgruntled sigh escaped a scholar as she made her way through the halls. Her eyes drifted across the doors she passed, seemingly looking for a specific room.
"I was supposed to submit my thesis and graduate this month if it was approved. Why do I need to go to this meeting? They never gave any information either!" she muttered irritably.
She fixed her cap where the black symbol of the Haravatat was pinned, feeling it slip off her head from her fingers anxiously combing her hair. Soon, her eyes fell on the only door that was opened in the halls.
That was it. The scholar walked in, surprised to see a few scholars with the Akademiya uniforms inside. They looked at her curiously just as she did them, but immediately resumed to whispering among themselves.
"Yavanani? You're here too?" a young man raised an eyebrow at the newcomer. The girl gave him an irritated look.
"Khaldun. I'm also surprised to see you here," Yavanani said. She looked at the yellow Vahumana pin on his cap in irritation but still brought herself to approach a familiar face.
"Did they mention anything about what we're called here for? I received a notification but that's it," Yavanani said, sitting beside Khaldun.
"I overheard the others in this room. Apparently, we were selected to take some specialized subjects. For a semester, I think?" Khaldun muttered.
"What?! I don't remember agreeing to take any electives!" Yavanani said in disbelief. "Neither any one of us did. I heard it was the Acting Grand Sage's orders or something," another Haravatat scholar with glasses crossed his arms.
"Senior Alhaitham did? Whatever for? He can't just make us take classes like this and expect us to comply! We've got deadlines to accomplish," Yavanani frowned.
"It's not yet confirmed. We have people from other Darshans in this room so it can't be an elective exactly. I doubt they have the capacity to take any of Haravatat's special subjects," the Haravatat male student glanced at the others indifferently.
"Whoever you are, I don't like the arrogant sound of your voice. And you sound as if we're interested in taking a Haravatat subject! Yeah, no," a female Amurta scholar scoffed.
"I never said you were going to take the elective in the first place. But considering how badly you misinterpreted my words, maybe you should so you know how words and sentence structures actually work," the Haravatat scholar said bluntly.
"Hey, break it up! None of us knows why we're here so stop jumping to conclusions!" Khaldun piped in. The Amurta and Haravatat scholars glared at each other but none decided to put in the last word.
Yavanani rolled her eyes. "Viraf and his choice of words..." she muttered.
She looked around. There were other scholars, the pins on their caps a mix of Vahumana yellow, Haravatat black, Spantamad red, Kshahrewar white, and Amurta green.
The only scholar present with the Rtawahist blue pin was at the back, mumbling to herself dejectedly and with eyes heavy with dark circles.
"I'm definitely done for... W-What if the mentors disliked my outputs and essays?" she muttered fearfully, "What if they called a meeting to expel me...?"
Her meek words caused the room to fall silent, planting another horrible idea into the present scholars' minds. Come to think of it, they were notified out of the blue and there's less than twenty of them in the room...
"Now I'm nervous," an Amurta scholar said quietly, "To be honest, it was hard to produce a paper in due time. Without the Akasha's assistance, research is more difficult now than ever!"
