"So, Miss Keller, what are your plans for the future?"
"I own a company that has hotel chains all over the world. Keller-Díaz, you may have heard of them."
"Hm." He narrowed his eyes. "I think so. I was staying in one in Belgium."
"Yes," I nodded, "we have one hotel there. I would like to donate a portion of the profits, that would otherwise go to building more hotels, to proven charities."
"How noble." The corner of his mouth lifted into a smirk.
"Human." I corrected him.
"Not everyone would agree with you." He shook his head. "But I like a good vision. Especially the one you have. Is there anything I can do? Help in any way?"
"Why?" Nicole spoke next to me, but she regretted it immediately, seeing the terrified expression on her face. But I'm glad she asked, if she didn't do it, I would.
"Why not?" He shrugged.
"We're talking about human lives here. Why not, is not enough of a reason for me to let you help, you could do something that would cost hundreds of people their homes."
I met people who only wanted to benefit from charities. Make a good name for themselves in the eyes of society. They promised how much they would help, but in the end, promises remained only promises.
He smiled. "I'm starting to like you more and more Miss Keller. How about we meet outside of this party and talk there?"
I thought about it. I don't know what his motive is, but if he is sincere, it would be foolish to reject him. "Monday, eleven o'clock, in my office."
"Agreed." He gave me his hand and we shook on it. "Now if you'll excuse me." He looked from me to Nicole and held out his hand to her. "Miss Thompson, would you dance with me?"
I think Nicole went into cardiac arrest for a little while. "Me?"
"Yes, you." He laughed amusedly.
"Um, of course?" She gave me an uncertain look and I just shrugged my shoulders.
They slowly moved away from me, but for the peace of my soul, I didn't take my eyes off them. At least for a while. When I noticed that Smith wasn't doing anything that Nicole found inappropriate or uncomfortable, I focused on other people. And despite the fact that I don't like to dance, I was convinced.
One of the guests was an elderly man who I didn't consider an investor, but he asked me to dance in front of seven people and I couldn't refuse.
"...then I told him that..." He continued his story, but I didn't understand the meaning of the words coming out of his mouth. I was hoping that Nicole would show up and save me, but that was probably just a silly wish.
"Mr. Turner?" Turner's story was interrupted by a man's voice coming from somewhere behind me. He was familiar, but I had a few glasses of champagne and no dinner, so I wasn't quite sure who it belonged to.
