I'm a wreck.
I haven't been able to concentrate for more than five minutes since morning. The words and numbers on the papers and on the laptop screen merged together and I couldn't think properly without my head going back to yesterday's conversation with my sister.
She didn't call or text, so I guess she decided to leave me alone. I thought I would feel better, but I don't.
"Come in." I said as someone knocked on the door. I raised my head from the table. "Yes, Nicole?"
"It's lunch." She informed me.
"Okay? Bring it."
"Um, no." She walked closer, a bit of nerves in her walk. "We're going out for lunch. And then we're going dress shopping for Saturday."
"I have meetings Nicole, I can't..."
"I already took care of that." She jumped at me.
"Excuse me?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I canceled your meetings for the day because we're going shopping."
She did what? "Nicole..."
"If you want to fire me, fine, but tomorrow. Keller-Díaz won't collapse in a few hours."
"I can't just walk away." I argued
"Why not?" She smiled and crossed her arms over her chest. "You're the boss, who's going to stop you?"
"I can't just..." I stopped when Nicole raised an eyebrow. "You're a bad influence."
"Come on, it's going to be fun."
"A bad influence," I repeated but stood up from the table. Maybe some time away from the company would do me good. "I'll fire you tomorrow."
"On the other hand, can it wait until Monday? I'm really looking forward to Saturday."
"Who are you and what did you do with Nicole?" I walked up to her.
Nicole, whom I met here for the first time, would not do this. What has changed?
"I'm just trying to spend time with my boss."
"You don't get any bonuses for that."
"I'll survive." She laughed and we walked out of my office together. "It's going to be fun and you need a dress."
"Fine." I let out a defeated sigh, but this was something I needed. Distraction.
*****
Lunch was fine, but we should have thought about it and tried on the dresses first, because now our bellies are full, and that means they will be more visible than normal.
"Welcome." The moment we entered the boutique, a tall blonde wearing a tight blue dress appeared in front of us. "Miss Keller. How may I help you today?"
