**Karachi — 9:00 PM**

Mahni entered the house and went straight to her room, exhausted. After freshening up and changing into her pajamas, she headed to her mom's room.

"Assalamu-alaikum, Mom. Can I come in?" Mahni said as she entered the room.

"Look at my dear princess. You must be tired from the outing," Mrs. Hamida said, looking at her daughter with a pitying face.

"Ma, I'm not tired. I took a shower with hot water and changed my clothes. But where's Dadi and Papa? I didn't see them," Mahni said.

"Your dad is out of town. He told you yesterday, have you forgotten?" Mrs. Hamida said, disappointed.

"Ma, sorry, I forgot. And Dadi?" Mahni asked.

"She's in the guest room sleeping. She said she was sleepy," Mrs. Hamida replied.

"Dadi! I wish I had met her before she slept," Mahni said with a pout.

"Don't worry, you'll meet her tomorrow, okay?" Mrs. Hamida said.

Mahni chatted with her mom about all the fun she had, the things she ate, and the games she and her friends played until she started feeling sleepy.

"Mum, can I sleep on your lap?" Mahni asked with puppy eyes.

"Sure, come here," Mrs. Hamida said, placing Mahni's head on her lap and singing her a lullaby until she fell asleep.

**Early in the morning,** Mahni woke up and went to her room. She performed ablution and prayed Fajr, then went back to sleep again because it was the weekend. Some hours later, Zara went to her room and woke her up, saying breakfast was ready. Mahni brushed her teeth again, took a shower, changed into some light clothes, and came downstairs for breakfast.

Mahni went to the dining table and was eating some toasted bread when Dadi came in with some sweets in her hand.

"Dadi!!" Mahni and Zara ran to her and hugged her.

"My kids, how are you? What happened to you, Zara? Why are you losing weight? Aren't you eating or what?" Dadi said.

"I'm eating very well, Dadi. Ask Bhabhi Mahni," Zara said.

"Dadi, she can finish a whole four plates of food in one hour," Mahni said, teasing Zara.

"Dadi, she's teasing me. Is it a crime to eat food?" Zara said with a pout.

"Hey, stop it, Mahni, or else..." Dadi winked at Mahni. "By the way, have some sweets," Dadi said, feeding them sweets.

"Mother, what are the sweets for?" Mrs. Hamida asked.

"Dadi, where did you go? I even forgot to ask you," Omar said after she sat down on the cushion.

"My soon-to-be groom, have some sweets," Dadi said, feeding all the members before telling them the reason. "Now I will tell you. I went to Imam Sahab's house, and we decided—me and your father-in-law—that your wedding is taking place next week," Dadi said with a smile.

"W-what? Dadi, are you for real? I'm getting married?" Omar said, shocked and excited.

"But Mom, why didn't you tell us that Bhai's wedding is so soon? You know we want to do a lot of things," Mahni said, looking at their mom.

"Yes, Ma, why?" Zara asked.

"Come on, it's a surprise. And your dad is coming back today. When he rests, we will make a list of guests who will be coming. Mahni, please go and change your clothes. You're going to the mall. Call Iman or Aliya to escort you. You're going to buy the lehenga and also your brother's clothes. I hope you know his size. I'll make a list of what we need," Mrs. Hamida stood up.

"And Nana and I will go to the market to get the flowers for the decorations and also mehendi," Zara said.

"So let's get to work," Mahni said and ran upstairs to change her clothes. She wore a yellow sharara, a yellow choli with her dupatta, and headed to the mall with Iman and Aliya.

They came back some hours later after a lot of shopping. Iman and Aliya headed to their houses to get their luggage and come to Mahni's house because it's her brother's wedding. They need to be there for her, just as she was there for them at their siblings' weddings.

In the night, Mahni's dad arrived and had dinner with his family. Then he headed to his room to change his clothes. His mom went in and discussed her plan to find a suitable husband for Mahni, revealing her intention to arrange Mahni's marriage with her friend's grandson and left without letting him utter a word.

"Hayati, what should we do? Do you expect Mahni to agree?" Ali asked.

"I don't know yet, but let's see if she will agree. Anyway, it's late. Let's go to sleep," Hamida said, climbing into bed and turning off the side bed lamp.

**Four days later...**
All the food items required for the wedding have been bought, along with the clothes and everything else. Guests from other cities have started arriving. Today, Mahni went to campus because she had a test and, immediately after, a midterm. At least she won't miss any events.

**Assalamu-alaikum**
