Third Person
2 Years Ago"I feel so stupid not standing up to him. He gives out these stupid commands, and the only thing we can do is sit there and take it." Nadira sat comfortably with her mother at their dining table. No food was being served, but it was the only place in the house to speak freely without the word of her father.
"We have no choice, mi hija. The man has power over this entire country, there's no way we were going to say no to him. You weren't being stupid, you were making the right decision." Neither sides of the argument were pleased with the topic, but they had no choice. Nadira's mother felt that as long as they remained financially comfortable, their lives would be okay.
Nadira knows her mother's heart and how her mother thinks. She knows her mother would never purposely put her in harms way unless it was the only way to get out of something else. "Mami what are you hiding from me?"
Kalani looked up at her, afraid. "What?"
"You're hiding something from me. You've never acted this way with me. What did he do to you? What did they do to you?" Nadira couldn't read the expression on her mother's face. She relied on the tone of her voice to give her what she wants. The silence sitting between them was alarming. "Ma?"
"I'm so disappointed in you."
"Huh?" Nadira's voice cracked and her eyes widened in disbelief. "Where is this coming from?"
"Do you think I wanted you to go be a cover girl? We had big plans for your future, and you dumped them. You were supposed to get a good job somewhere that provides a nice life. You were valedictorian, and you threw it all away to play dress up." Nadira's heart broke listening to her mother's confession. "I haven't told you because I know you're happy with where you are, but this isn't what I wanted for you. When Mr Tucker gave us that offer, I began seeing hope for you."
"Mom...You told me yourself that your parents didn't let you dream, you've made it better for me."
"I see why she didn't let me dream. I'm using the talents and gifts that God gave me to be someone important in the world." All of the background noise came to a stop. It was only the sounds of their own heartbeats that filled the space. "You've wasted all of the potential we've worked hard for. I didn't leave my family in another country for my daughter to become a magazine whore."
"Mom!" Nadira stood up from the table staring dead at her mother. "You left your family to create a better life for you and me. You gave me the opportunity to dream!"
"I didn't want you to dream of wasting your damn life! You sit in a room with people who make money off their bodies! You may as well have been a stripper!"
