Meet Luca
(We get a brief shot of Alberto's hand grabbing a big sheet of white paper and a marker from somewhere in the house before laying out on the floor of Giulia's bedroom. At the middle of the bottom of the paper, he draws one of his caricatures of her face and then her name, then draws a line going up from it to make a line connecting her dad's face and name to her mom. He pauses when he gets to her mom.)
Alberto: What's your mom look like again?
Giulia: Like me, only... taller. And without the hat.
Alberto: Got it. (Drawing the face out)
Luca: What's all this for?
Alberto: We're gonna make one of those... family tree things, so we can figure out who in the Marcovaldo family was a sea monster!
Luca: Oh...
Alberto: You don't have any brothers or sisters, right?
Giulia: (Sarcastic) Do you see anyone else here? None of us have siblings.
Alberto: Right. Well, we know that your dad definitely isn't a sea monster. Not when he's running a pescheria. (Putting an X over that picture.) What about your mom?
Giulia: Non c'è modo. I've watched her wash her paintbrushes thousands of times.
(Alberto puts an X over that picture, too, then sits back and they all sit in silence and realize how much family there could be.)
Luca: This is... gonna be a lot harder than it just being your mom or dad.
Alberto: (Bending over the paper to draw lines coming out from both her mom and dad's pictures to form more connected lines) How about your grandparents? Have you met any of them?
Giulia: (Head shake) They all died before I was born or when I was really, really little. I don't remember them at all.
Alberto: (Just drawing really simple faces for them because none of them know what they look like) So now we've got four options.
Luca: But... how do we know how far back this goes? What's a person who's a half-sea monster do?
Giulia: He's right... I've never had anything that sea monsters do happen to me before, and neither have my parents. ...If that's how it works.
Alberto: (Whistle of "Oh, boy") If it goes that far back... This could be impossible.
Luca: (Flipping open the curses book again to try and see if there's more information) Uh-...
Alberto: Because if it's not your grandparents, then it's one of eight great-grandparents, and if it's not them, then that's... (Counting on his fingers)
Luca: (Trying to get their attention) Guys, I think-
Giulia: Sixteen. Sixteen people.
Luca: Giulia, Alberto, there might be an easier way to-
Alberto: (Dropping the pencil onto the paper) If we get any higher than sixteen, you're doing all the math.
Giulia: As long as-
Luca: GUYS. (After they both look over at him in surprise) ...Sorry... But... Don't you think we should try checking Signore Marcovaldo's family first? Cause... you said he's got the pescheria?
Giulia: (Look of excitement, hugging him for a second) Luca, you're a genius!
Luca: (Hesitant but happy) ...I am?
Alberto: (Ruffling his hair) Don't get any ideas. (Small pause) ...Why's he a genius?
Giulia: Papa grew up here in Portorosso!
Alberto: What's that got to do with anything?
Giulia: (Grabbing both boys by the wrist to pull them up and with her) There's gotta be someplace that has all of our family history... And I think I know where it is.
