(There's a few birds chirping as we see the kids still fast asleep at the table. Luca starts to stir a bit and rubs an eye as he hears the door start to open.)

Luca: ...Giulia? ...Alberto? (Looking up)

(Upon looking up, he realizes that Mr. Marcovaldo is entering.)

Luca: (Shook) S-Signore Marcovaldo??

Alberto: (Just stirring, groggy) ...Huh-... (When Luca nudges him and he notices, jerking awake and kicking Giulia in return)

Giulia: (Noticing almost right away) Papa-?? Wh-what are you doing here-??

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Hanging up his coat and hat) The boat I was using broke down, and there weren't any others available... so I came back. Now... (Looking over at her, voice changing) Did you really think I wouldn't notice?

Giulia: (Freezing, grabbing the edge of the table) W-wait- It's- I-I can explain-

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Such a hearty laugh) Giulietta, I'm not upset that you forgot to close the windows.

Giulia: O-oh... The... windows! Yeah, we just... forgot about those...

Luca: (Sheepishly small voice) Our bad.

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Coming to them to put his suitcase on the bench near the kitchen table) It's alright, kids...

(He comes up to the kitchen table and looks over all the papers scattered everywhere, even on the floor and kitchen counter, as well as the sheepish faces of the kids. He makes eye contact with Giulia and raises an eyebrow.)

Giulia: (Nervous grin) ...School project.

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Suspicious) It's the summer.

Alberto: (Nervous laugh) What she means is that... Luca and I were... just... y'know, wondering about the Marcovaldo family. So... she was showing us all their records!

Luca: Like how... (Quick glance down at the nearest paper to him) Her great-aunt Gianna won a pie-baking contest-!

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Mostly buying the story) I see... Well, if you kids are cleaning up here, I'll finish unpacking. Then we can put some espresso on... (Voice fading as he walks away into the hallway)

(The kids all share a sigh of relief when he's gone.)

Giulia: That... was close... I thought for a second he had figured it out... (Stacking some of the papers together)

Alberto: (Shoving a bunch of papers into a file) Did either of you find anything out about this... sea monster relative? Because the only interesting thing I remember is that your grandpa was part of a kraken sighting way back in 1953. (Sigh) Even though they found out it was just a bunch of seaweed...

Luca: (Shaking his head, taking the file from him to put the papers in more neatly) I don't even remember how far back mine went...

Giulia: So... we're not closer to fixing this-?

Luca: At least we know... what the curse... does. Th-that's gotta help... right? (Trying to offer something)

Alberto: (About to hand him more papers for the file before realizing something) Huh... That's weird... There's nothing here about this guy's school...

(Giulia looks up, thinking it might be something important.)

Alberto: No... not like that... as in... there are... pages missing.

Luca: (Picking up the papers on top of his open file) There's pages missing in this one, too...

Alberto: Which... means that we could have... missed something...

Giulia: (Remembering) A couple years ago, they lost a lot of papers from a bunch of the family records... (Rubbing her forehead) Santa mozzarella, how could I forget?

Luca: They... haven't found them?

Giulia: They lost lost them. They think that someone accidentally threw them out when they were cleaning... (Putting her hands on the table) ...It'll be fine. We'll just... have to... keep looking.

(She looks up at the boys, both of whom seem worried for her.)

Giulia: (Little laugh) I'm fine, ragazzi. We'll... figure out a way to fix this!

(At this moment, Mr. Marcovaldo comes back into the kitchen.)

Mr. Marcovaldo: (Turning on the radio to some Italian opera) Who's hungry?

Alberto: (Hushed whisper as all three are huddled over the table) And keep it a secret from your dad...
