Nightmare

The three of them were now cuddled up on the couch, Elli had taken a while to get totally comfortable but was now sleeping in between the two women, her head on Carinas chest. Maya had previously been rubbing Ellis back and her hand had remained there.

The movie was long over, the two women just talking quietly, as to not wake their little girl.
"Is it normal for a kid to react like that to dropping ice cream?" Maya asked without taking her eyes off Elli.
"No bella. She zoned out and panicked. There's nothing normal about that."
Carina answered, while holding the little brunette a bit closer.
There was a pause before the blonde spoke up again.
"She was so scared of being alone this morning too. You think we should maybe get her some therapy?"
"That feels like the right thing to do. But let's give her some time to settle in first. Sí?" Carina didn't want to rush anything right now. Neither did Maya. They just needed their girl to feel comfortable.
Maya nodded, still looking at a sleeping Elli.

After another 15 minutes, Maya carefully lifted the little girl off Carina's body and carried her to her room, setting her on the bed and tucking her in.
Carina came by to give Elli a good night kiss on her forehead and they left the bambina to sleep.

Elli woke up, and the warm, cozy and safe feeling from earlier was gone. She was alone. Again.
She sat up and rubbed her eyes. She wanted so desperately to go to Maya and Carinas room but, she thought she'd bothered them enough today already.
So after sitting there for a while, she laid back down, pulled the blanket over her head and curled up into a little ball, eventually falling back asleep.

Elli woke up again, but not in the apartment. She was back in the house. Her dads house.
Her heart rate increased instantly, all the memories flooding her brain.
She got up off the couch and walked toward the front door, everything she wanted was to get out of this house.
As she reached for the door, she felt someone yank her ponytail back, throwing her to the ground.
Elli screamed, as loud as she could. For Maya, for Carina, for someone to save her from this.

Maya suddenly woke up. She didn't know what had woken her until she heard a whimper. Then a scream.
Elli.
It sounded like she was scared to death.
Maya jumped out of bed, quickly shaking Carinas shoulder.
"Babe get up!" She called before running across the hall to the little girls room.
She hurried towards the bed, only to find Elli curled up under the covers, shaking and whimpering for help.
"H....help. Maya, Carina please."
Mayas heart broke as she quickly lifted the blanket and started to rub the girls back and gently shake her arm to try and wake her.
"I'm here honey, you're save. Wake up baby." She cooed.
Carina had now entered the room as well.
"Bambina, what's happening?"
"I think it's a nightmare." Maya answered quickly.
Just then, Ellis eyes shot open and she frantically tried to get away from the two women standing at her bed.
Maya stepped back a little, to give her space but still tried to help her calm down.
"Hey hey, you're okay, it was just a bad dream sweetheart."
Ellis frantic eyes scanned the room and finally landed on Mayas icy blue ones. She let out a huge breath, her eyes starting to fill with tears.
„Oh baby, come here." The fire fighter said calmly.
The little girl crawled forward, towards the blondes awaiting arms.
She wrapped her small arms around Mayas neck and the blond pulled her up, onto her hip. She slowly started swaying from side to side.
Carina stood behind her wife and put a strand of the little girl's hair behind her ear.
"Shhh bambina, va bene."

Elli looked up at Carina, she wanted to be held. Maya was comfortable and cozy but she wanted to be held like on that day at the hospital. So she looked up, still crying and reached her hands out, trying to get Carina to hold her.
Maya looked puzzled but handed Elli over to her wife.

„Bambina? Do you want to tell us what you were dreaming about?" Carina questioned while adjusting Elli on her hip.
Elli shook her head, hiding her face in the crook of the Italians neck, still crying.
„Shhh sweetie, you're save. We're here" Maya cooed.

The three of them were now sitting on Ellis bed, leaning against the headboard. The girl had calmed down and had her legs on ether side of Carinas lap, with her head in the woman's chest.
"I'm sorry I woke you." She whispered.
"No honey, don't be sorry. You can get us any time you want, day or night. Understood?"
Maya clarified.
The little brownette simply looked up at Maya for a moment. Then she spoke again.
"He's mean."
"Who is, cuore mio?"
"And scary." Elli said, without answering Carinas question.
"Hmm?" Maya said quietly.
"Is it your dad Elli?"
Again, just a look into Mayas eyes. But the blonde understood. She put her hand on the girls head and kissed it lovingly.
"I..." she began "we...will never let him hurt you again baby."
Carina watched, with tears in her eyes.

After about then minutes of silence, Maya got up. Elli looked at her attentively, still holding onto Carina.
"Let's go to our room." Maya said.
The Italian nodded and started to move but Elli instantly whimpered again.
"No! Don't leave. Please." She whispered.
"We're not leaving you honey, you're coming with us. There's more space for the three of us there." Maya smiled sadly but kindly.
Elli was surprised but glad she wouldn't be spending the night alone.
Carina held her tight while getting up and carried her across the hall. She laid Elli down and shortly after, the girl was fast asleep.

„How do we make this permanent?"
Maya asked suddenly.
„You want to make this permanent?"
Carina was surprised by her wives words.
„She can't ever be hurt again Carina."
The blonde didn't look up at her wive. She only had eyes for the little girl between them.
Carina put a hand on her Mayas.
„She's here for now. She's safe Bella. Let's talk about this tomorrow si?"
Carina wanted nothing more than to make this permanent. She had fallen in love with Elli, the day she came to the hospital.
But this was surely not a decision to make at two in the morning.
Maya nodded and laid down, so did Carina. They fell asleep cuddled up to their foster daughter.
