Black Widow chapter fourteen: Girls

The scent of nail polish and perfume lingered in Moon's bedroom. The scent from her incense had completely disappeared once the nail polish came out. Moon had invited her over for a girls day. She wanted to get to know her better because she was Eli's best friend.

Sloane felt like a complete fraud as she sat across from the girl on her bed, blowing on her freshly coated nails. She was playing nice and trying to be friends with Moon while the whole time she sat with a pit in her stomach because she feared for her feelings.

She'd been thinking about it a lot. This little crush of hers had been going on for way longer than she thought. All the times she told him she thought he was cute, the hugs, and subtle touches. They made her heart flutter. And now with this newfound confidence and his tendency to wrap an arm around her while they walked, it just made it more obvious.

The fact that she couldn't say anything ate away at her. She shared everything with Eli and Demetri. There were no secrets between them. Not Eli's sleep enuresis, not the fact that things bother Demetri far more than he lets on, or the fact that Sloane had used the five-finger discount more than a few times on jewelry and makeup...and the occasional glass or roll of silverware from The Red Door. But this...She'd be selfish to tell him this. It'd ruin their friendship if not his relationship with Moon too. For his sake, she had to keep this to herself.

"Even though they'll probably be chipped the second you enter that dojo, you'll have really pretty nails when you get there," Moon said with a chuckle as she let go of Sloane's other hand.

"You're really good at this," Sloane complimented as she looked at her nails. Moon had done a design with a pink background and little white flowers. And she was right, they'd probably be ruined before the end of the day, but they were really cute.

Moon smiled "Thanks. I'm glad we got to do this. I can't believe we've never hung out with just us girls."

Sloane nodded. "Yeah. I've never really hung out as 'just girls' with anyone, so this is fun," she stated. While she was glad to have Demetri and Eli, she never really had any girls her age around until Maddie started working at the restaurant, so all of this was still new to her.

Moon looked surprised. "Really? I gotta make a list of activities we have to do this summer. Spa day, brunch, shopping. Have you been to that mall on Northridge yet? We should go tomorrow. I'll invite Sam, it'll be fun."

Sloane paused to think of how best to respond. She didn't want to come out saying her family was poor. She decided to put the majority of the leftover money from the settlement aside for emergencies, leaving a small amount for herself to make sure she could somewhat keep up with her friends this summer. But that wouldn't be enough for a summer of spa days, brunches, and shopping sprees.

"I can't hang out with Sam. Miguel's my friend, I can't do that to him," Sloane tried. Of course, she followed the bro code, but that wasn't her biggest concern about it.
