I flew faster than I had ever even tried before. My wings hurt from the constant flap as I chased the last of the sun's light from the day. My body felt cool and I knew I was pushing well beyond what I should have. "Kyanite! Slow down! We have time." Duha said for the fourth time.
"I can't! Reina could die!" I growled.
"If Reina dies so will Michi, Pup, Eric and your brothers. Calm yourself, or you will kill us both before we can raise the cry for help." Duha said softly patting my chest.
Her words in that quiet voice of hers had the right effect on me and I slowed. I felt the warmth return to my body slowly as I slowed the flapping of my wings and Duha stopped shivering. At this moment home loomed up in front of me. "The way in is through the top. We need to climb and the air will get thin."
"I know." Called Duha.
I roared as I climbed, and this time, I breathed fire that would have melted even this rock with its rage. I knew doing this would get the attention of every Dragon in the mountain. They would feel the heat of my anger and hear my pain as I called to their souls. Good. I will burn everything to molten rock to save my Reina!
Cresting the mountain, I roared once more, then cupped my wings, hurtling down faster than I should have. At the bottom, we landed with a boom that shook the whole mountain.
As expected the elders were waiting for me at the fissure that led into home. "You come back in a rage to wake the Dragon fire beneath us. What angers you so?" My father asked.
"I have had the sight. The village is under attack and everyone there will die without aid."
My mother hung her head and I felt her reach for the ancestors for their incite to the world. When she raised her head she whispered to the elders. Purple elder crossed the space to a large drum. He climbed into the seat, and after a brief pause, he started beating a rhythmic beat on the drum that warmed my heart. He beat out the call for war.
"Come, eat and rest. We will fly out in the morning and be there an hour into the attack. You know as well as I do that they will hold for three hours before all is lost." My mother said softly.
I nodded and followed the other elders into the mountain. They walked another way to us as we went into the family wing. "Excuse me but is there somewhere I could lie down?" Duha asked rubbing her back.
I translated the words for my mother. "Of course. Follow me." My mother said, gesturing to Duha.
She lead Duha away to a room next to mine. The sound of steps drew my eyes to the end of the corridor. I saw people running back and forth as the drum continued to beat its rhythmic song. My father rounded the corner and headed towards me. "There will be no formal meal tonight Kyanite. Get some for your friend and get some rest." I bowed at my father's words.
