I moved my horse between Katja and the man, bringing my quarterstaff up, catching the head of the axe and stopping it before he could finish his swing. The boy cried as the crowd gathered.

"What is this?" Called the pack leader.

"Wolf attacked me." Said the large man in front of me.

I was about to protest when I heard the clatter of a wagon. "That is not true. I saw this man attack Pup. We all know that a Wolf will come at the call of their Pup. I think this was planned to force these two away quicker." Rat was standing on the seat of her wagon as she spoke.

I let my quarterstaff drop to my lap. The man dropped his axe and then brought it up again. I let him swing for me then hit out with a quick hand.

The axe dropped to the floor as my stave made contact with his wrist. "Kick me out of your pack if you wish but do not hurt a child!" I shouted at him.

I looked down as a soft hand touched my arm. Katja looked up at me, smiling. "We will go, Wolf. We don't need anyone else."

Nodding, I offered her a hand, she took it, and I pulled her into my lap. "Wait, Wolf." I looked around at Rat.

"I'm going to get our things." I growled.

I led the horse towards the wagon Gorilla shared with us. After a moment her wagon clattered up next to me. "I would talk to you before you leave." I looked at her stopping the horse.

Katja jumped down. "I'll get our things and come back."

I nodded to her and watched her run off. "Stay close. We will need you." I growled as I turned back to her. I saw her fight her fear to keep eye contact with me. "You are Duha, the Wolf of the battlefield. I know about you. My pack was chased out of our home and a woman came to the people attacking us. She howled and brought wild wolves down on the humans. So I know what you truly are."

"And what is that?" I snapped at her.

She smiled. "You are someone who fights against the wrong in the world. There is much wrong in this world and we will set it right if we can. So stay close and maybe the others will see it when you ride in to save them."

I stared at her and she started to turn her wagon. "If you hadn't come to our rescue I would have lost my only family, so thank you."

She left me sitting there on my horse feeling sad. I couldn't save very many of the people in that town. I don't know how many people she lost because I couldn't get there in time. "Come on then, Wolf, let's go."

I looked over my shoulder at Gorilla as he walked up with the wagon and Swallow. I saw she had the boy and felt my heart sink at the thought of him staying. "I have given him my wagon. I will stay with Rat's mother and look after this one for you." She stroked the boy in the sling. "You be safe out there Duha." She bowed and walked away.
